Mansfield-Derby traffic-free (or mostly traffic-free?) cycle route?

I've been thinking recently of cycling from where I live (Rainworth... but I'll take Mansfield!) to Derby and wasn't really sure how to do it.

I am generally a leisure cyclist, don't cycle on main roads, just back ones round little estates, and always use cycle paths where they are laid out. So, I am not the sort you will find sprinting down the A38 in a competition with an artic!!!

I am trying to piece together a route but am finding it quite difficult. I mean the easiest thing would be if there was a cycle route down the A38 but I'm not holding my breath!!

I have downloaded the Mansfield & Ashfield Cycle Map from the council which is great, and it shows there is an on-pavement cycle path down the section of the A38 that goes through that area.

However, I downloaded the Derbyshire one and that doesn't seem to show all the on-pavement ones so the A38 is blank - and although I am not sure on ALL of the A38, I am sure that nearer to Derby there are some on-pavement ones.

Then there is always Google Maps, which is a lot better than it used to be as it now shows cycle routes, but they are not always the safest routes.

Realistically I think my options are:

1. Rainworth->NCN route 6 down to Newstead Abbey/Hucknall->across to Eastwood->Erewash Valley Trail to Long Eaton->NCN to Derby (I am unclear how I would make the Hucknall-Eastwood section)

2. Rainworth->Sutton-in-Ashfield->Kirkby-in-Ashfield->Ripley->Ripley Greenway down to Derby (I am unclear about the Kirkby-Riply section)

There is always the option of NCN 6 all the way to Nottingham and across to Derby, but this is probably the greatest distance not to mention a route I have done in chunks previously, so I am keen to try something different.

So if you have any thoughts or suggestions (even on any completely different routes!, I'd be most grateful.

Hi Leafy.
Apololgies for replying when I have no local knowledge about your route and cant answer your question.
You have obviously looked at all the angles and your post is very detailed.
I get frustrated by peeps who post 1 liners asking for help on cross continental routes.
Good luck with getting replies from your post and deciding which route to take.

Have you tried driving the route.
keep the pedals turning

Hi Buster,

Thanks for the reply.

Haven't tried driving it because I can't drive. :oP We did go down the A38 recently though and there is no cycle lane down a large chunk.

Think my best bet is, to be honest, to go via any of the village routes and eventually there will be some cycling signposts.

If I ever undertake this task I will post my feedback. :-)
