Do you need any special permit for cycling in the Canal? And, after that, the key question, is it possible to reach London through the Canal route, or is there any point where you cant continue? Thank you |

Managed it on fairly budget hard tail MTB's with rear panniers for tools, spares and changes of clothes. Chose 3 days (sensibly) as we did little/no training before this. He bikes both ran schwable marathon MTB tyres (with the built in puncture protection layer) and slime inner tubes. Neither of us got a puncture all trip. I traced the beginning of the GUC to underneath spaghetti junction near the centre of Birmingham. This worked well for us as we was starting in ward end (2-3 mile away) plus it was quite interesting seeing spaghetti junction from canal level underneath. We did 57.6 miles on day 1 and stopped in a small place called Weedon Bec - where my friend was living at the time so was an ideal target for us. Day 2 we set out fairly early after the obligatory bacon sarnie and did 57.6 miles when we stopped in the premier inn Hemel Hempstead. There wasn't anywhere designated for the bikes but we had called in advance and checked and they allowed us to store them in a secure room at the back of their office (covered in mud too!) Decent dinner, great night sleep, bit of a lie in and then wetherspoon breakfast the following morning... Day 3 Hemel to London- 40.3 miles takin us to 155 miles in 3 days. Got off the canal near to centre of london and cycled the streets to Euston station. Then the express train back to Birmingham international. Great weekend would recommend it to anyone and everyone. All we said we would do to improve it is take a portable gas burner and kettle to have a cuppa on our rest breaks. |

Is it still muddy or is it better than the leighton buzzard-tring section? Thanks |
