Hi

So I'm introduced to Terry by my friend Carl, we met at Anfield Plain roundabout. Carl had arranged with Terry to hook up so we could all go out for a ride on our bikes together. Terry was trying out a new bike he had been loaned from a shop.

We set of from the Plain and rode up towards the Transformers on the cycle track. On reaching the Transformers we cut back onto the road and headed up towards Pontop Pike then down the back track through Dipton and ended up at Lily Gardens. Across the road and down another back trail through Tantobie an ended up going through Tanfield and back onto the cycle track.

From the track we then rode to Beamish and came out at the Shepherd and Shepherdess. Carl then asked if we fancied going down the big bank besides the Shepherd, yeah we said so again we set off. Anyways the bank is very steep and twisty. Carl was at the front, Terry behind him and me at the rear. Both Carl and Terry were flying down I checked my speedo on my bike and I was doing 33mph and they were well in front of me. I hung back a bit coz I knew it was a bad bank with a few nasty turns from my days when I used to be a postie.

All was going well then I saw that this big white lorry had stopped in the road for some reason. I don't know where Carl had gone, but then I saw Terry slam on his anchors and begin skidding, bloody hell I just saw this big Jag car on the other side of the road. The truck had pulled over blocking our side of the road to let the Jag past and Terry was hurtling towards it. Then Bang!!!! Terry hit the drivers side with his knee an both him an his bike shot in the air. Then his bars bounced off the bonnet of the car and Terry was flung towards the windscreen, he then smacked into the screen his head hitting it and was flung right up in the air as he bounced off the car. It all happened in a split second.

The bloke in the car got out and was pretty irate at first, but he soon calmed down and to be honest was quite a nice guy, even offering to help Terry home. Both Terry and the driver of the car exchanged details and we then decided to have a ride back to Terrys just to make sure he was ok as his leg was canny bruised and swollen.

Most people will think Terry was unlucky that day.......yeah he was in that he will probably have to pay for the damage to the car and he has a sore leg, but hey if you had seen the way he hit the car and think of what could have happened I'd say he was very lucky indeed. I'm just pleased Terry was wearing his helmet. It's funny because we were discussing about the use of helmets earlier in the day saying sometimes you don't pop one on, either because you feel a pratt or you just can't be bothered. I know I'll always be wearing one in future as you just never know.

Hi, Do you know how many peoples' lives cycle helmets have saved?
It's interesting when you try and get to the facts, there are plenty of anecdotal stories such as this, plenty of 'the helmet cracked in two and therefore saved his head' but there is no evidence to back up that they have prevented serious injury.
Here are some facts as far as I can ascertain:
They are designed to absorb some impact between a cyclist and a stationary object (around 15mph mark I think) and then only to the crown area. The design is no where near as good as a motorcycle helmet and shouldn't be compared in any way.

There is an excellent site (nothing to do with me) called cyclehelmets.org that carries out research into the facts and gathers plenty of research together:

I'm glad Terry was relatively unhurt in his accident but it's a far stretch to say that the helmet he was wearing saved him from serious injury.

Wayne.
