Cycle Steps
This is a great road bike route if you have climbing legs.
Starting out from Alston the first climb is Hartside Pass, a long drag up th to cafe.
Beware of the Power Rangers on their Kawasaki monster bikes whizzing past you though.
A great long descent on the other side into Melmerby then undulating down to the A6, where you follow the signs for Pooley Bridge.
Follow the road around Ullswater to the bottom of Kirkstone Pass. Another long climb with a sting in the tail.
Stop at the top to admire the view before heading down The Struggle into Ambleside.

The Struggle, as it's name suggests, is one hell of a climb if you happen to do this route in reverse, and a great place to watch the Helvelyn Triathlon later in the summer.
