Cycle Steps
Ecclefechan is located just off the M74 and is one of the smaller towns in the Dumfries and Galloway region. It is the birth place of Thomas Carlyle and his house is open to the public to view. The route starts on the main road B725.
Heading East on the B725 leave Ecclefechan village. Cycle for approximately 2 miles until you arrive at Hoddom Bridge crossing the River Annan.
Hoddom Bridge is the site of an early Christian Church, close to Hoddom Castle. There is a shop at the castle for any refills, but only 2 miles in I'm sure you will be fine.
Crossing the bridge follow the B725 right uphill towards Dalton. Quarter of a mile on take the first left just past Hoddom Estate Offices.
Cycle to the first cross roads turning left at Uppermoor Farm. Cycle to the next T-junction turning right just after Lowermoor Farm.
Follow the road for the next 2 miles. When you arrive in Howes, you can either choose to carry straight on into Annan, or turn left on exiting the village following signs for Brydekirk.
Follow the road up for a mile and a half turning right at the T-Junction and you will arrive in Brydekirk High Street. Brydekirk has 2 watermills that are certainly worth a look, and a lovely village inn for a well deserved lunch.
Exiting Brydekirk, crossing over the River Annan, turn left. Follow the road north for approx quarter of a mile turning left at the cross roads. Another half a mile turn right and you will shortly arrive back in Ecclefechan.
Landmarks/Pubs for lunch/Sites to see?
Brydekirk Village Inn good for lunch. Brydekirk Watermills built in the 1800s. In Hoddom, climbing to the top of Repentance hill gives you great views of Lower Annandale.
