Cycle Steps
1. This is part 1 of 2 for an East Kent loop. Start in Canterbury (we chose the Penny Theatre in Northgate), head towards Ashford. There is a cycle route but we chose to use the A28. From Ashford follow on towards Brenzett, and continue towards Rye. Before entering Rye there is a signed cycle route along the road to Camber - it is extremely good. Follow on towards New Romney and take the coastal route to Sandgate. To avoid the hill into Folkestone, use the promenade. There's a bit of a hill out of Folkestone to Capel Le Ferne, but it's not too horrendous. Follow the cycle route over the cliffs into Dover, and then up Castle Hill Road - which is a bit of a hill. Take Upper Road near the castle and follow this, picking up the cycle route by the coastguard station. From here it's plain sailing into Deal! (see Part 2)
Landmarks/Sites to see?
Lots! Canterbury is full of interesting history. On the way to Ashford look to the East for the Wye Crown. Look out for the turbines on Romney marsh - they're hard to miss! You could carry on into Rye - only another 1/2 mile - which is a rather nice historical place. Camber Sands are a good stop off for an ice cream, and Lydd airport has the occasional plane coming in to land. There are some Nepolionic Martel Towers along the stretch between New Romney and Folkestone, so watch out for them. Views from Capel-le-Ferne (inc. the Battle of Britain Memorial) are great, as are the views from the cliff top into Dover. Dover Castle is right beside the route, and Walmer and Deal both have Castles from the Tudor times. Good chippy on the front at Deal!
