| 1. Riders need to be fairly fit since it can be hilly, though no big long hills and reasonable gears. A touring bike or road bike would be best, but If you fancy riding on Grizedale's trails a mountain bike would be OK.
The route starts out from the town of Kendal heading west-wards crossing the A591 and on an undulating route to the ferry crossing of Lake Windermere at Bowness. Once across the ferry head south alongside the beautiful lake to Graythwaite and then turn west again before heading north to Satterthwaite and then to Grizedale Forest Visitor Centre. After a stop here head north to Hawkshead and then west to Coniston. Follow the road south to Torver and Water Yeat before crossing bottom edge of Lake Coniston to take minor roads to Bouth and onto the finish at Newby Bridge. |

Kendal is the Gateway to the Lakes and the majestic hills can be seen straight away. As you approach Lake Windermere the beauty increases with the trees and the lake with all its rustic shoreline. The ferry is cable operated and on a bicycle you can usually jump to the front of the queue in busy times and make a quick journey across. Food is available in Bowness. The nearest bike shop may be one in Stavely and the two in Ambleside. Food also available at Grizedale Visitor Centre and Hawkshead. At Grizedale there is a sculpture trail, mountain bike hire and good routes plus a "Go Ape" treetop challenge - excellent.
