Cycle Steps
This is a road route, almost entirely on small lanes, that goes from Thorverton, on the edge of the Exe Valley, through the Culm Valley into East Devon and down the Otter Valley to Budleigh Salterton, ending at the tea shop on the beach front. The highest point, which is also half way, is at a well placed bench on the hill south of Talaton.
Head out of Thorverton on Silver Street and follow this across the river to the A396 T junction.
At the junction tyrn left onto the A396, then first right off again into Babylon Lane. Follow this through two crossroads, the second with a slight kink right, and on till the next crossroads. Turn right onto Park Road, heading away from Silverton.
Follow the road as it swings right, goes across the railway bridge and on till the T junction. Turn right, go over the river and swing left to go through Killerton and over the M5.
Immediately over the M5, and before the B3181, look for a pathway through the trees on the right. Take this to a country lane which will take you to a junction on the B3181.
At the junction, turn right onto Exeter Road, B3181, then take the first left, off again onto a country lane. Follow this to the T junction and turn left onto Burrow Road.
Follow Burrow Road, over the crossroads, left at the grass island and on till the first main turn off on the left, into Saundercroft Road. Follow this across the crossroads, where it becomes Cockeram's Road and on till the T junction.
At the junction turn right and follow the road as it swings sharp left, goes past Whimple, turns right over the railway bridge, goes through a built up area, over another railway bridge and on till the T junction near Talaton.
At the junction turn right, heading away from Talaton, go over the railway track for a third time and swing sharp left. Follow the road over a crossroads, swing slowly left, go through trees and swing sharper right.
After the trees, go past the first road that comes in acutely from the left, then take the next turn off on the left, which immediately swings sharp right. Follow this, parallel to the road you have just left, as it swings under the A30 and then comes back up to rejoin the road you left. Continue on across the crossroads at Fairmile and on into Coomberlake.
In Coomberlake, turn right onto Cadhay Lane and follow this through the outskirts of Ottery St Mary to the B3174 crossroads. Go straight over this, heading for Salston, and follow the road through the right left kink, Salston, Fluxton and into Tripton St John.
In Tripton St John, turn right onto Hayne Hill, heading for Harpford. Follow the road into Harpford and turn right onto Lower Way. Follow the road as it swings left and goes to the A3052 T junction.
At the junction, turn left onto the A3052, then first right off again, heading for Northmostown. Follow the road, fork right at Kitts Lane and continue till the Pinn Lane junction.
At the junction turn right, away from Pinn and follow the road into Otterton. At the T junction turn right onto Behind Hayes and left at the T junction onto Jacketts. Take the next right onto Park Lane to leave Otterton.
Follow the road to Kersbrook and on into Budleigh Salterton.
