The Kingston Phoenix Road Club is a small cycle-racing club based in the Epsom/Worcester Park/Sutton area of South West London, but with members who live all over. We were formed in 1936 as the racing arm of the Kingston Section of the Cyclists Touring Club and currently have a small but loyal membership of roughly 50 people. Our main claim to fame in recent years has been the number of women actively racing for the club. Saturday morning social rides from Epsom: The Saturday social rides are popular with many of our club members giving them an opportunity to meet for three or four hours on Saturday mornings. There are rides for on-road and off-road groups, meeting at 10am (to leave at 10:15) at the main car park in Horton Country Park in Horton Lane (near to the Old Moat Garden Centre). The rides are usually between 15 and 30 miles, riding out to a local café and usually return to Epsom between 1pm and 2pm. The pace is conversational and is not a training ride, although sometimes members go off after the café stop and do their own thing - and anyone wanting a training ride can do a slightly longer route to the cafe. The Café Stops Rota gets varied on a fairly regular basis, so click on the link for the latest rota listing from the club blog. Some of the tea places that we visit are listed below, they are not all on the current Café Stops Rota, but hopefully all the stops on the current rota are on this list: Garsons Farm, Esher Polesden Lacey tea rooms Stoke D'Abernon garden centre West Horsley garden centre Wisley tea hut in woods - map Some members race in Time Trials and road racing with the Surrey League and the League of Veteran Racing Cyclists, and mountain-biking. We are not a club of superstars by any means. On many occasions we have won awards by default: our riders have finished in the prizes because it was a wet or windy day and the fast men didn't ride! So overall we are a club of plodders, whose main aim in life is to enjoy our sport. New members are always welcome Sadly we have outlasted the Kingston Section, but now have links with the Cheam & Morden Section of the Cyclists Touring Club. The Cheam & Morden is part of the South West London DA and information about their rides, and the other sections in the DA can be found here. The Phoenix have a club night on a Thursday evening between roughly 9pm-10pm. In theory it is a joint clubroom between the Phoenix and the Cheam & Morden. It is held at Worcester Park Athletic and Social Club, which is in Green Lane, Worcester Park, well hidden behind Worcester Park station. There is a bar, and hopefully lots of convivial chat. www.kprc.org.uk
