You could pick up a decent second hand bike from eBay. I started that way at first before upgrading last year. Get some advice from your local cycling shop. They are not just looking to make a sale. Are you looking for a commute, off road "leisure" cycling or on road touring? A bike isnt just a bike these days. Even within mountain bikes there is a vast array of options.
