Just wanted to say hello to everybody.
I am 42 years old and the last bike I rode was a Chopper.................you can guess how many years ago that was.
Just finished a pretty extreme diet in which I lost 2 stone in a little under 4 weeks and am still looking to lose about another stone , hence me getting a bike.
Don't know what it's called , but it's a mountain bike from Halfords that cost me about £ 250.00.
The scary thing about it is the amount of gears it's got ( 27 I think ).
What's that all about ?????
I did'nt want to go mad moneywise when buying my bike just in case I don't stick at it/I total bike early doors and ruin it ( delete as applicable ).
If I do stick with it and a.) enjoy it and b.) it keeps the weight from creeping back on , then I will go out and spend 'proper' money on a 'real' bike.
I have been looking at the Kent cycle routes and there are a few that look worth a try.
Wish me luck , I think I am going to need it !!!!

Welcome to the new world of cycling,i guess a three speed Chopper is a bit different to 27 gear beasty ! The roads are a bit hairy compared to the chopper years mainly due to people not caring too much for us two wheelers but on thr other hand we have some nice new off road trails to play on.
Good luck and keep us posted

Hi
I totally respect your decision to return to the world of bikes dude. WELCOME BACK !
and hey a £250.00 bike, dont knock it ! it don't matter what your riding and you are sensible like ya say to see how you get into it before lashing out hundreds of pounds.
My current bike cost me NOWT as I built it up from three scrapped bikes lol, after my hybrid got stolen ( thieves cut through the lock so be careful where you lock up your shiney new steed dude)
For sure things have changed a bit since the days of 'the chopper' but don't let that stop you

A very warm 'WELCOME' dude, happy riding !!

firstly, losing over 7 lbs a week is extremely dangerous to your health.
Be VERY careful with how quickly you pick up the cycling and strenuous exercise.

that is a 24,500 calorie deficit per week! blimey!

do not be surprised if around half the weight comes back, as is extremely common with extreme dieting. Much of it will be fluid loss.

2 lbs a week is sustainable, healthy, and far more likely to stay off.

if you are starting to exercise more, and cycling is excellent if you are a bit overweight, as it is impact free on the joints.
It's helping me lose weight without trying too much (about 1 lb a week, though) stone down - another to go.

nothing wrong with a Halfords special for starters.

If it is for you, though, buy your 'proper' bike from anywhere but Halfords!
use your local independent - great service, and professional advice. (Neither of these are available at Halfords)

good luck!

Hi K3ith, just wanted to let you know you're not alone in your quest. Only been back on a pedal bike for a few weeks after 20-odd years in order to lose some weight. Bought a Barracuda Plasma MTB for £180 from Littlewoods cattie! and I'll never look back. Yes, got the bum like a blood orange at first, but at the moment only using it for work and about an hour after I finish, nothing too strenuous for now. But I'm loving it and will gradually extend my riding times and distances in the future. Don't overdo it and you will love it too! Good luck and keep us posted, as I will too.

I am in the lucky posistion of my childhood mountian bike, a Cauld Butler Stone River. Still in working order (well sort of.) I'm now 20 years old and need to use my bike to commute to work, a 6 mile bumpy off road ride. It's now in my local inerpendate bike garage, not halfords after reading some blogs on here, getting a gear service and some SPD's fitted. And a new rear wheel as the axel is broken somehow.

Also working in a school I have the advantage of half term's etc, so I'm planning some big trips when my bike is fully working and my fitness has gained after the commuting.

One more here. Hired bikes on holiday in Delft this summer and realised what I'd been missing not having been on a bike since I was 18 a few (28 to be exact...) years ago. Came home and ordered a Dutch bike from Littlehampton bike shop and haven't looked back. Losing the lard and feeling better, unless I can't get out for a few days when I become unaccountably tetchy till I get a ride in again! Now I'm planning to get a road bike next spring because much as I love my Dutch it's a city bike and not geared for speed, more comfy cruising around taking in the scenery.

Hi K31th,
I'm a newbie too - and loving it !! Got my bike 3rd hand at a knock down price - a Marin Bobcat Trail - it's a beaut.
In the month and a half since I got it I've clocked up 400+ miles and my back end has never been tighter lol. Lost loads of weight from all over & gained tons of muscle in my legs and shoulders - why o why didn't i do this 10 yrs ago....
A £250 bike from Halfords is not a bad starting point - it may take a long while to outgrow it - I have to disagree with someone who said Halfords people know nowt - my store has a keen enduro rider in the dept & he gives excellent advice on bikes / kit and rides - chat with your salesmen, you soon find out if they know anything and actually ride a bike seriously :-)
I did not feel I was very overweight until I went to visit my mother at March Bank Holiday (a spade is a shovel), I hadn't visited for 8 months or so.
I now have a goal of going from a BMI = 32.8 to BMI = 25.8 (a loss of 40lb) before the end of May Bank Holiday when I visit again. I have not been on scales since March but I know I am a LOT fitter than I was in March and will be moreso before end May.
My one piece of advice is, do the miles regularly, eat correctly and the fitness and trimness will come (sounds like Kevin Costner lol).
Good luck & stay healthy !
Paul

Hi Keith,

I'm back on my back too, I got back into it whilst I was on holiday in Spain, going on 40 mile bike rides and anywhere and everywhere on the bike.

Good luck with your weight loss, keep it up but keep it serious.

Hopefully within the next year or two I want to do Manchester to London then London to Paris.

Unfortunately my commute to work is only 2 miles and takes me no time at all.

If anyone has anmy good cycle routes around Manchester, would you care to share?

Cheers
