Went out on my new bike tonight. Changing down going up the big hill I'd chosen for my training ride, and there was a horrible crunch and the bike stopped. Thinking that the chain had come off I looked down to find that, yes it had - because the lower part of my chainset had just 'snapped' off.

That was the bad bit. The good bit was finding out how strong the bond is between us cyclists. As I was walking home, balancing my bike on it's front wheel and thinking "This is going to mess up my back by the time I get home." A fellow cyclist coming in the opposite direction stopped to ask what was wrong, when I explained he told me to wait where I was. He only lived a few hundred yards up the road. This gallant knight got his car and gave me a lift back home - just what a Damsel in Distress needed!!

Off to the bike shop tomorrow, thanking goodness for warranties, and the bond between cyclists!!

it sounds like a warranty issue to me, if the bike is as new as you say.
Good luck! You didnt buy it from Owens did you?

Ho Provene,

Perhaps if there were a few more cyclists in our world, it would be a better place for everyone.

Keep us all posted on the progress you make with your cycle repair? Hope you get back onto the road soon.

Regards
Aurum

That's for sure Aurum.

Basically the hanger was 'sacrificed' because something went wrong with the rear mech. Bike shop said (at first) that it was just one of those things (a bit like a puncture) and said it was because I had put too much pressure on the pedals when changing down, and that it wasn't covered by warranty. (it's less than 2 weeks old!)

A) I hadn't (made a few duff gear changes in my time, but that particular one wasn't one of them)

B) That they had a steady run of this type of accident in.

Anyone know if that's true?

Got the bike back today and they have repaired it FOC (thankfully wouldn't have liked to explained that one to the non-cycling hubby) and the gear change is now like silk!

pressure on pedals tensions chain along the top from front to cassette. The chain running through the rear mech is NEVER under tension, so your foot pressure did NOT cause it to snap.

now if the rear mech was set up wrong, for instance it allowed the chain to ride past the lowest gear and jam in between cassette and spokes, this would cause things to jam, and the rear mech may get stressed sideways and snap. It may also go into the spokes hence the damage.

Thanks for that Dudley. I don't know anything about the 'mechanics' of it all so am at the mercy of the LBS. It has lots of advantages in that I can walk there and back, it's just down the road, they close late enough that I can get in there after work etc etc, but sometimes I do think they are spinning me a yarn, and this was one of those occasions.

The gear change wasn't great before (but I thought this would be something to be sorted out during the six week service), but is now 'mysteriously' improved and he did do it for nothing, which leads me to think that there was a problem with the setup from day one, but they just won't admit it.

I'm quite pleased that you think there was a problem with set up as I was worried it might happen again, miles from home this time, but reading your post I'm much happier that the problem won't recur now.
