Boardman Hybrid back wheel problem

Joined: 06 Apr 2010 Posts: 50 Bike: My Profile | hi guys, ive got a boardman hybrid and the back wheel is wobling from side to side and catching the frame, took it to halfords and they said i need a new back wheel due to it being a sealed unit and the balbearings coming loose. Does anyone else have any issues like this or are they taking rubbish. any ideas? cheers |

 Joined: 14 Feb 2011 Posts: 35 Bike: My Profile | From your other post it doesn't seem that you use the bike for commuting so you should be willing to have bike off road for a little time. Try the Bicycle tutor site http://bicycletutor.com/overhaul-wheel-bearings/ and see how easy it is. You will need a couple of good spanners and 2 cone spanners, the ball bearings and grease. If you have only just noticed this you may be lucky and have caught it before any damage is done. If not and you have damaged the cups (the bearing surface in the wheel hub) then it may be a new wheel is the cheapest option. The only difficulty you should have is getting the correct tension on the cones (the adjustable bearing surface on the axle), that is just trial and error. If it is too loose tighten it a little. If it feels like there is grit in the bearing slacken it off a tadge. Watch out for it being overtight when you put it back in with q/r nipping it up a little bit more. I've always done my own maintainance except wheelbuilding so I'm always wary when someone, sucks in through teeth and says "Need a new one mate". Check it yourself first. As with your chain prob you may need a new cassette and I'd use an LBS rather than halfords for that anyway. If you don't feel confident with the wheelbearing as them for a 2nd opinion. |

Joined: 14 Feb 2011 Posts: 35 Bike: My Profile | If it turns out that the wheel does have a sealed bearing go for a relacement wheel that doesn't. Much easier and cheaper to regrease and maintain a regular hub than replace wheel or have wheel rebuilt around new hub. |
