Hi I have just started cycling over the last couple of months with a couple of friends while the children are at school and we love it! although I don't love my clipless pedals, as i keep falling over...still clipped on, bit scary on our ride along the tow path yesterday! Any suggestions ?

practice.
try unclipping regularly, even if you aren't stopping, and soon the motion will become second nature. Wont take long!

Hi Sallyann, the pedals can be adjusted to make it easier to remove your feet. You will need an allen key for the adjustmen,t to loosen the tension spring. Doing that will make it easier to twist your ankle to release the cleat. Make sure you do it on both sides of each pedal.

Thanx for responses! I have them adjusted as loosely as they'll go, as i,m now terrified of falling off, always when grinding to a halt and in front of a crowd, I'm cycling with one foot clipped in, which is defeating the object, plus it makes my feet ache!

Like someone said above, keep practising unclipping. I have the occasional fall even now 3 years on. Usually when something distracts me as I am about to unclip. Most of the time its only your pride that really gets hurt.I personally fell over on a club ride right in front of around 100 other riders, everyone cheered and clapped, it was rather embarassing. 1/2 a mile down the road the same thing happened to a mate of mine, everyone cheered and clapped again, including me :-)

For years I rode using toe straps a clips on road bike and just cups on MTB. Since going clipless I have only had one "clipless moment". That was caused by a cleat bolt coming out.
Perhaps my years riding strapped in meant that I have always had to think ahead about getting out of the pedals.
As others have suggested practice, plan ahead, be ready for the unexpected (WHAT!!!).

I noticed it is a long time since your post how are you doing now? Have you stuck with clipless?

Hi
Yes i've stuck with the clipless pedals after getting lots of grief from my 'friends' and yes i have mastered them although i have fallen off loads of times! I'm now debating on whether or not to get a road bike as i'm on a Trek mtb with slicks on, but hope i don't take as long to master a road bike!!

I can't see the point of having your feet attached to the bike. I prefer not falling off a bike when I'm out cycling. I have loose fitting toeclips on my hybrid and only pedals on my MTB. Easily removing your feet from the pedals to the ground is much more important to me than a microunit of extra power by being physically joined to a bike. Plus when you have those daft shoes on, and stop for a coffee if looks uncomfortable and sounds ridiculous!

Still everyone to their own thing I guess. Good cycling everyone!

The only scary incident I've had was when one of my cleats came loose on the bottom of my shoes, it was the one on my left foot which I always unclip 1st (dont know why just do), couldnt unclip for the life of me and nearly fell off at traffic lights in the centre of Chester, always make sure I do some maintenance on my shoes every few weeks to be on the safe side.

I've had a couple of "loose bolt moments". The first I lost a bolt out on a ride and had to roll over onto a grass verge to remove shoe and then cleat. the second I had both bolts come loose but didn't lose them when I pulled up back at home. I now have all cleats secured with bolts with thread lock.
