Problems with rear wheel on Boardman Ltd Edition MTB HT

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering whether anyone has had problems with the front or rear wheels of their Boardman MTB. About 8 weeks ago I bought a Limited Edition Boardman MTB fitted with Ritchey WCS rims and cartridge
bearing hubs through the cycle2work scheme run by unfortunately by Halfords(we had no choice on this one!).

The bike itself is great to ride and very light. However a week ago I was out with friends for a gentle cycle on a local cycle path when the rear wheel started to wobble violently and felt as though it was about to collapse. The wheel had buckled so badly I was unsure whether I would be able to make it the 5 miles to home without it collapsing. Luckily I did though only very slowly. Further examination revealed that there was a V dent on one of the rims and a spoke had nearly pulled through.

It was clearly not impact damage as there were no chip/scrap marks on the rim, the tyre or the plastic decals on the outside of the rim plus it is a £1000 MTB and we were on a cycle path! It was more the the wheel had gently folded in on itself.

I'm about to take it back to Halfords but I would like to know whether anyone has had similar problems whith the rear wheel.

Hi,

I'm sorry but I don't own that bike but it does seem very odd that it has worn so rapidly. Take it back to Halfords. Good luck, you'll need it ;-)

the road bikes had early problems with 'loose nipples' but appear to have been solved of late.
My Team Carbon has given me no problems over 750 miles or so, and i do check the spokes regularly because of the historical problem.

If you take it to Halfords and do not get a satisfactory "we'll replace it" straight away from the Bike Hut Manager, go in with (polite) guns blazing to the Store Manager (1 marginal pass GCSE in underwater basket weaving), Regional Manager (4 GCSE's in woodwork, media studies, waterless car cleaning & exhaust acoustics), copy to Boardman BIkes (heads screwed on) and Halfords head office all at once. No messing.

Fingers crossed it is a one off fault.

Did you get your free six weeks service?
If so, it has only been outwith Halfords with a clean bill of health for two weeks, which is in your favour.

reports are such that some have had excellent service when returning with a fault, including immediate replacement, upgrade etc, and some have been met with unfocussed eyes, blank stares and general apathy.

good luck!

I have recently bought a boardman on cycle to work scheme from Halfords Newbury, my wheel only a few hundred yards down the road came out of the frame due to not being tightened up, I took it back to Halfords who said that is a boadman fault and they do not check how tight the wheels are in the inspection, brakes and crank worked loose after 2 services and only half a mile of riding, I have spoken to the store Manager a guy called Ian and Mike in customer services who brushed my comments aside weith not much care for my saftey and think that I am over reacting, what do you have to do to get a reasonable service from Halfords actually brake bones?

I would like to hear from anyone who has had problen with Newbury Halfords as I am creating a file to hand to trading standards to try to stop any repeat problem / fatalities.

i think with halfords it all depends which store you deal with and the staff, i deal with one locally to me (Keighley) nr bradford and one guy there (mark) is great but i went to the bradford store and they really didnt seem to know or to care. shame really as boardmans are great bikes so long as they are checked and set up correctly.

Accuracy is key when it comes to finding the best route. A route finder should be able to accurately map out the quickest route between two points, taking into account traffic and other considerations. It should also be able to provide detailed information, such as estimated travel time, tolls, and any road closures.
