Ridgeback or Trek

My trusty old Dawes appears to be finding the end of the road. I've been quoted £160 to fix it, and frankly it will need more doing within the year even then. SO. Question which of the two makes above do you think offers the best value for money?

I'm looking at around £300 to £350 price bracket. Mainly do road riding, with a few tracks thrown in where necessary. Def. want to keep the triple chainset (I LIKE my granny ring!!) but also like a bit of speed and 'fun'. (That indefinable factor). The LBS sell Ridgeback and swear by them (but they would). What do you guys think? I'm looking for a long-term love affair here - not a quick fling!

any reason you are limiting yourself to Trek & Ridgeback?

I like the spec of both, and they are the right price, but I'm open to suggestions.

Well I try to help! But seriously any suggestion are welcome. I've seen last years Trek model at £330, and it seems a good spec for the money. The LBS swears by Ridgeback, but I've seen a few dodgy comments about frames and wheels breaking on the internet.

Boardman only seem to do a double chainset, and I DO like the granny ring for some of the monster hills near here.

Any more suggestions?

Is it a road bike you are wanting then?

Specialized seem to be highly rated with them getting favoured reviews in the bike mags but at a price of around £500.

I have a Trek hybrid and haven't had problems and my son has a Trek as well and all has been well. One retailer did tell me that Trek are sometimes a difficult company to get hold of to sort problems out but depends then what the issue is really.

Daughter has a Ridgeback and also no problems. LBS now don't do Ridgeback as they felt that the other brands offered more for the money.

I've just bought my first road bike which is a Scott Speedster and I love it but have nothing else to compare it with. Mind you, my choice was purely driven by the fact I loved the look of it but I know that's a woman thing!

Thanks Bubbajones, it's always useful to get feedback from people who have both brands. I think I'm going to be spending a lot of time in the local bike shops around the area over the next few weeks!

I want a fast hybrid (I think). Although I did have a drop handlebar bike before, and quite liked it. It's the mudguards and triple chainset that seal it though, I know a lot of the 'true' racing bikes don't have the capacity for those.

Ive got a Trek 8500, had it about 9 months and I love it.
I can not comapre with the other brands as the only other bike Ive had was a Claude Butler. But ive had no problems whats so ever with it, Its light, easy to maintain and can certianly pick up some speed.

Sister in law just got a new road bike from Claude Butler for £330 earlier this year

it was last years model, which saves quite a wedge just for a change in livery.

worth waiting for the 'last year's' model sales in the new year at times.
keep an eye on the information superhighway for deals

£330 for a reasonable ride - carbon forks etc.

not to be sniffed at

Interesting Dudley, although the price bracket has gone up (as it tends to inevitably do!) Tried the Ridgeback Flite, and that seemed good. It had the pace and lightness I was looking for.

Tried the Trek and it felt very quick and repsonive - a bit too much so, I could see me coming a cropper. The Giant I tried was much steadier, it had carbon forks for comfort, but it felt like a cob compared to the thoroughbred feel of the Trek. The Ridgeback felt more like a well-bred horse, but not so nervy. Also the Trek seemed to have a narrow handlebar - which felt odd.

The cheaper ridgeback felt like the old Dawes, but lighter. Steady and reliable, and dare I say it just a bit boring? But the more expensive one did feel a bit more 'fun'.
