Im thinking of cycling with a few friends next summer from Vancouver to San Diego over about 6weeks. Just wondering if anyones done anything similar? I wanna find out how tough its going to be. I know its pretty much all costal so not to many hills. We're thinking of doing about 40/50 miles a day, which we think is do-able. does anyone also know of any must see places that arnt obvious tourist places?

Any feedback would be great :)

Have you read The Hungry Cyclist by Tom Kevill Davies http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hungry-Cyclist-Pedalling-Americas-Perfect/dp/0007278845/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1252178434&sr=1-1

I am sure this was part of his route so may give you some usefull info although I haven't read it yet so not totally sure how much info there is on the route itself.

Good luck with the trip anyway.

I have driven from san francisco to san diego.
I would definitely recommend Carmel as a place to visit/stay, also La jolla is a really cool place with a laid back atmosphere. Venice beach is an "interesting" spot to visit also.
Not much help I know, but may be useful.

Hi buzz, I am cycling the route now and I am in san Francisco at the moment, there are a few hills but if u stick to mostly route 101 and route 1 it will be about 1500-2000 ft climb tops. I got a lonely planet book called, 'cycling the west coast of America' it has been our bible!!! http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d.html/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/191-3551398-5698308?a=1864503246

I navigated for the first 20 days with little map usage and just this book. Not that I would suggest doing that though. We camped mostly at nice state parks.

If you like beautiful coast views, an amazing challenge and quiet local towns. U will love it!! Check out westcoastriderz.org, my website about it. And my Bly on it says alot

hi there,

No idea how fit / old you are, but i think you can comfortably up the mileage, and still see plenty along the way.

at an average speed of 10mph (this is very leisurely) you will cover your alloted distance before lunch.

if you can average 12mph when moving, which is not too much of a challenge, 60 miles is only 5 hours in the saddle, or 2.5 hours each side of a leisurely lunch.

That way you can either shorten the trip, or take more time out or even whole days, in key locations along the way.

that said, i know absolutely nothing about the Canadian / US coast.

We cycled the US Pacific Coast (Vancouver to San Diego) in Sept/Oct 2011. Our full trip log can be found at: http://www.peteandianhittheroad.co.uk/2011/11/2203-miles-vancouver-to-san-diego-complete/

We rarely did over 60miles a day - mainly 30/40 miles a day. It's a great trip.

Hi I stumbled upon this site while looking for a route through spain and france. I am American and have biked coast to coast many times and have ridden Vancouver to San Diego (where I live). You absolutely MUST go to www.adventurecycling.org and purchase/ use their Western coast maps! This is a fantastic organization with great maps. The ride is spectacular ! Have fun and beware of the logging trucks in Oregon!
