Can anyone suggest an approximate route from France (any Port town) to Portugal avoiding any well known problem areas?

Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul, did you get any advice on this and, if so, how did the trip go? I'm doing Central Portugal to East Yoekshire in April 2012 and I'm looking for good, quiet roads.

Regards,
Andy

Hi I'm looking to do a very similar ride this August 2013 but from Central Portugal to Brighton, U.k in aid of the cancer unit at the Royal Sussex hospital. I would very much appreciate it if you could share your route with me.

Thanks Doonbar

Hi Doonbar,
I live in Lousã and rode to Bridlington, East Yorkshire. I took the most direct route possible riding first up to Guarda then onto Salamanca. After that here's the rest of my route:
Valladolid, Burgos, Miranda de Ebro, Vitoria, Bergara, Deba, Donostia San Sebastian.
In France I followed the coast road through Biarritz, Capbreton, Mimizan, Biganos and up to Le Verdon sur Mer where I took the boat to Royan to miss out Bordeaux.
Then I headed to Cherbourg in a straight line-ish as follows:
Rochefort, Marans, Clisson, Pouance, Vitre, Fougeres, Coutances, Cherbourg.

I sometimes got caught out on very busy roads, and the odd motorway in Spain which was pretty scary. There are some great, dedicated cycle paths (more like roads) through France, which I seldom used due to wanting to go "direct". However, if I were to do the ride again, I would use them as they are so safe, and the trip probably wouldn't take much longer than it did.

I hope this helps. If you need anymore info, just ask.

Cheers,
Andy
