Cycling and camping across Spain

In June I am planning on flying to Barcelona, and then cycling across Spain on the scenic roads to Santander where I will pick up the ferry home. I will be going solo, and camping/hostelling along the way.

I did something similar across France last year and was able to plan likely campsites etc along the way easily beforehand. I'm finding it much more challenging this time for Spain. Has anyone done this kind of trip before in Northern Spain, and have any idea whether simple campsites and/or hostels are easy to find and plentiful. I'm trying the keep the budget low, and these are only places to sleep for me, as I intend to spend most of the day on the road.

I would welcome comments on anyone elses experience of this part of the world

Hey mate, did you do the trip in the end? I'm looking at doing a trip from Santander to Barcelona as well and was wondering what the route was like? cheers

hi

i can't comment for cycling but i have motorbiked a lot in spain and i cycle a lot elsewhere

i found spain difficult and different to france in that the towns are really spread out.

prior route planning is perhaps important.

cheers

I'm also planning on cycling from Santander to Barcelona (as the first stage or a larger trip) April 2014. I will be free camping mostly so I'm quite flexible but any experience (e.g. particularly tough roads in terms of steepness) would be appreciated.

Cheers

Knowing that camping is legal as long as you don't use a ovo tent while riding in Spain is a good idea because technically, it's illegal pretty much everywhere.
