Planning a 16 day 700 mile club event ride on roads hopefully with some support. Going to return via Camino de Meir's along coast. Would be great to hear from anyone with experience of cycling in northern Spain. Traffic on n roads. Helpfullness of bike shops. Recommended accommodation? Size of hills! Good Spanish food choices? Cheers chris

My Profile
I hope Im not late:
Spain is my most favourite cycling location, and the Atlantic coast is the best of Spain.
* Traffic - main roads are not very pleasant but drivers are mostly aware of cyclists, and shoulders are wide. Thre are plenty of side roads which are usually rough and narrow but scenery and quiet.
* Shops - not as professional as the big cities, but available almost everywhere.
* Accomodation: Santander itself is not recommended, both more expensive and less pleasant. I can recommend some places on the way.
* Hills: WOW, everywhere. But the scenery is worth it.
* Food: My favourite is "ensalada mixta con atun y huevos" - simple fresh salad with tuna and eggs. Anything more sofisticated is a risk [although empanadas - filled pastry - is great].

I cycled from the Algarve to Santander via Santiago de compostela in 2015. It was a memorable experience. Northern Spain was stunning. I stayed mainly in hostels which were quite busy but excellent value and a great place to meet people (I was cycling on my own) I too found drivers extremely courteous except for one crazy motorcyclist who undertook me round a roundabout! The terrain was very hilly but I was told that if you stick to the national routes which run parallel to motorways and are therefore not too busy they were originally routes for ox carts and therefore though they can go on forever the gradients are manageable. This was my experience. Hope this helps. This year I'm cycling from Ibiza to Bilbao if anyone has any tips...
