I started riding it happily but noticed I'd get horrible headaches from shoulder and neck pain after the ride. All specifically on my left side. I figured it was because of the new position (I'm used to a mountain bike on which I did a metric century several times. So I went for a basic bike fit (knee elbow, shoulder and hip angle) and that helped somewhat. The guy at my LBS did indicate that my left knee seemed to be closer to the tube than my right one and told me to try out riding for a few days and if needed he would do a more intensive fit and maybe add extensions or inserts to cleats or shoe on my left. I have been riding since then and a few short rides were OK but the longer more intense rides just give me too much pain on mainly my left side. My lower back and left hip just feel like they are locked. And whereas I don't get those excruciating headaches anymore, I am just in too much pain to be enthusiastic about going for a ride the next day. I try stretching and work with weights to get a bit more strength in my legs, but it isn't helping much. I am so bummed because I bought the road bike to be able to go much further than 100 km and also get more speed going, but up to now the longest ride has only been 70 km. Has anyone experienced the same or maybe have some tips/advice for me? MUCH appreciated! |

I think it's caused by the difference in posture between the two riding positions, you have to tilt your head back further on the road bike. My pain normally only lasts for a few rides as by then my neck/shoulder muscles seem to adapt. As for the other pain you're suffering, I typed "cycling lower back and left hip pain" into google and one of the causes could be sacroiliac joint pain. I would suggest you read a few of the articles thrown up by google and see if they gel with your problem. There are also loads of youtube videos on bike-fitting, these might offer some insight into lower back pain. Hope this information brings you some relief ! Cheers Chris |
