Being tall and that consisting of mainly leg i tend to bash them if I do come off. Just started road biking so I havent come off that yet but I am always tumbling off my mountain bike. Worst leg injury was the most innocuous one as it looked like nothing then swelled up the next day. That took 6 weeks to sort out after various antibiotics and anti-inflamatories didnt work. :-) |

Anyway back on subject; I was going fast downhill when I hit a small bump that sent me flying up in the air and landed on my front wheel making me go over the handel bars and slide about 5m on my front! Only got a few cuts and bruises but apart from that I was fine! |

Joined: 14 Aug 2010 Posts: 4 Bike: | Newbie here, and first post. Was interested to see what sort of injuries people get as my last 2 wheeled passions (ones with engines) have left me with assorted broken bits (right collar bone, left collar bone twice, 3 ribs, little finger, assorted screws and metal plates) not to mention all the bruises and gravel rash. Bought an XC/trail bike a couple of years ago when daughter was born and haven't got out much until recently. No broken bones, yet, but I have had a few silly offs. Much like the last post, I went over the handlebars - a failed attempt to nip across a couple of logs. Front wheel went over the first but the second one moved forward allowing the wheel to drop down between them. I was summersaulted over the bars, and as I use SPDs, the bike summersaulted with me. I hit my dodgy shoulder on the ground, must have whacked my head, but thank goodness for helmets, and the bike crashed down on to my chest. Dont know how, but I had such a bruise on my thigh that it took weeks to fade. Hopefully, that will be the worst that happens (touching wood) |

Joined: 17 Apr 2009 Posts: 5 Bike: | My injury was from a big fall when skiing - bent my right thumb back and it's never been the same since, especially when cycling and going over uneven roads! Have tried replacing and changing the handle-bar grips to larger padded ones with more support to my thumb, but it's still fairly painful and put me off cycling more than 20/25 miles at a time. Has anyone got any suggestions or know of better handle-grips that would help? My bike has straight handle-bars. |

But my big one was a couple of years ago onmy way home from work not enough room in my bag for some last minute dinner provisions so on the handle bar they went took a corner at about 25 wind caught the bag knoked it into my front wheel everything went into slow motiona i sailed through the air landed straight on my face and ended up with a shattered chin broken and dislocated jaw and the oobviouse gravel rash from skidding my face down the road a lot of blood and the wind was knoked out of m. the miraculous bnit was the car behind stoped about 6 inches from my head too. was eating soup a shakes for 6 weeks whil my jaw reset and lost about 4 stone in weight |

Although compared to the sound of your numerous injuries - I can't complain! |

I managed to keep control but twisted my knee and ankle ... then I had another accident again going fast down hill and my seat bracket broke ... so as not to be thrown into the road I hurled myself into a ditch suffering cuts bruises and damaging my rotator in my right arm ... still waiting for an appointment with a physiotherapist. |

Joined: 28 Aug 2011 Posts: 7 Bike: | Crushed Windpipe Riding home along a coastal route, dark rainclouds loomed ahead and the sea was a beautiful deep shade of green. I Stopped, took a photo and put on a waterproof jacket and pressed on into the heavy rain and strong headwind. It was difficult to look ahead as rain kept stinging my eyes so I relied on peripheral vision, only looking up occasionally to check the sea wall was clear ahead. Went on like this for a couple of miles when suddenly bang! I ran into an aluminum five-bar gate positioned across the prom to prevent vehicle access. I fell over sideways, toes in the clips just laying there in a puddle thinking I had done some serious damage. After a few minutes I got up but couldn't swallow and found it a bit hard to breathe.Felt like I'd been kicked in the neck by a horse.I managed to phone my wife who came out and took me to local casualty.I was shivering with cold, soaked through and in shock, panicking because I couldn't swallow. They took me straight through to a bay, gave me an Ibuprofen jab in the backside which reduced the swelling and established that the windpipe was only bruised, not fractured which would have been worse. Luckily the collar bone was only bruised but could so easily have been broken. Throat was really sore for about ten days and swallowing remained difficult but then it slowly eased and after a month was back to normal. The bike was OK, not even a buckle to the front wheel. What I've learned? Look where you're going! |

Joined: 14 Apr 2011 Posts: 2 Bike: | On my commute to work about three years back I hit a stationary bus less than half a mile before my work place. I was on a green lane which I knew didn't have many bus services using it. I was trying to work my legs into a head wind so (on my hybrid bike) put my arms down flat over my head stem, and got my head down. Looking up I saw a bus about 400M away, at a bus stop indicating to pull out. I looked back down in my make-shift TT position, knowing it would be gone before I got there. The next thing I was bouncing off the back of it. Fortunately I hit it dead centre, on the relatively springy engine access door (at about 25mph). I still managed to dislocate my should and break a load of ribs and damage a whole lot of muscles in my chest. I also managed to crack my helmet both sides, left side where I hit the bus, right where I hit the road. Everyone had to get off the bus and wait for another one, I am surprised I never had a few more injuries from annoyed commuters. The bus driver gave a statement to the police, telling them that because of the noise, he thought he had been hit by a car. The paramedic had to cut off my favourite cycle jersey in the ambulance. |

Joined: 02 Sep 2011 Posts: 1 Bike: | I've had the usual bumps and scrapes, a couple of fractures of my left wrist but am currently recovering from a pair of broken metacarples (Bones in the hand). This latest injury was caused by cycling over a wooden bridge which was protected with welding mesh on a wet day. The bridge not being flat and my tyres being high pressure racing tyres I was unable to stay upright even though I was travelling slowly. I didn't put my hand out to avoid another fractured wrist and ended up with a broken hand instead. A fractured wrist is now my fracture of choice as I will be unable to work for 8-10 weeks where as my wrist fractures have just been painful. If anyone has advice on the best wet weather tyre I'd appreciate it. Looking at web sites they don't seem to promote tyres for the wet very much even though I'd have thought it'd be a great selling point. |

Over time I have destroyed two helmets that I have no doubt saved me from a fractured skull. A smashed front wheel and bent steel forks saved me from some broken bones. Where your helmet and mitts, take care of your bike but most of all be lucky. |

Joined: 17 Aug 2012 Posts: 6 Bike: My Profile | The only really bad crash i've had was a couple of years ago when cycling with a friend (thankfully) I caught a groove in the road surface which wedged my front tyre in it and threw me from my bike at about 20mph sending me landing in the middle of the road smashing my head on ground as I landed. I always wear a helmet so other than a small crack in the helmet and a splitting headache I sustained no head injuries but I did manage to tear a good layer of skin off my legs and elbow (it would have been worse if I was not wearing a baselayer), chipping a small piece of bone of my elbow (the piece of bone is still floating around in my arm), and a good layer of skin torn oof one of my legs too. Thankfully we were near a country cafe where the helpful staff gave me a cup of tea as I was a bit shaky, sat me down until I was feeling more relaxed, my friend had some headache tablets on him which helped the pain and we managed to cycle home the remaining 15 miles after a bit of rest time and I manaaged to shock mny girlfried coming home with wounds and starapping around my arms and legs, she hates the sight of blood. |

Joined: 24 Jul 2012 Posts: 2 Bike: | Had literally just had a conversation with my mate about how he should 'man up' and start doing the descents a bit faster to keep up with me, we set off again and within about 30 seconds I hit a patch of thick mud which stopped my front wheel dead throwing me straight over the handlebars. I was locked in and managed to use my face as a brake, finding the only rock sticking out of the mud. My front teeth went through my lip leaving me with a 1 inch hole all the way through my lip, 2 broken teeth and a horrendously bruised ego. 9 stitches later and some root canal work on my teeth, I still have a tooth that is going to fall out and a lovely scar across my top lip. Strangely enough, my mate still cant stop laughing everytime I mention it!!! |

Joined: 06 Jan 2013 Posts: 2 Bike: | Some nasty stories guys, but I am writing to see if anyone has suffered a balance injury? My husband managed to fracture his skull in a bike accident this summer and severed some temporal nerves, hence deaf on one side and no balance information on that side either. So he is having to relearn balancing. I was wondering if anyone knows any cyclists who have come back from something similar, and how they did it? I would be grateful for any info to encourage him, he is very fed up with not cycling. Thanks in advance. |

I broke my arm in 10 places this was pinned, plated and screwed back together, dislocated my shoulder breaking my humerous head and dislocated my clavicle. This happened at the end of September last year and prior to the recent snow I have only just managed to get out for the first time since rather gingerly. |

Joined: 28 Feb 2013 Posts: 1 Bike: | I broke the same wrist with only a hairline fracture, nine years apart. The first time I was chasing someone who tried to run me off the road, when I made a wrong turn in a mall parking lot, crashing into a parked car. The second time with the same wrist, I was knocked off the road, because I wasn't 'taking the lane'. So the motorist could easily tell the police, they didn't see me. Even though I had been viewable to them, only moments before. |

I take it steady I guess and give my self as much space and time and get off if unsure. sounds abit wet really! |
