Direct - Involves going on the cycleway by the side of the A27 - which doesn't go the whole way - then busy roads after turning left on the outskirts of Brighton. By far the quickest way, but not for a new or nervous cyclist! 2. Go coastal! - Down from Lewes to Newhaven - NOT on the A26 - use the much nicer road that runs parallel the other side of the river, then right onto the A259 into Brighton. Longer and hillier than choice 1 but decent scenery between Lewes and Newhaven, and good views along the coast road. Beware of traffic coming into Rottingdean. 3. Cross country - The longest and probably hardest route, but much less traffic. Wend your way West from just North of Lewes aiming at Plumpton and Ditchling. Depending on your fitness, turn left at Ditchling to go up to the beacon, then continue across the A27 into Brighton. This a VERY steep climb and will get you extremely fit (and sweaty!) Alternative is to carry on under the Downs into Clayton, where left to pick up the cycleway running alongside the A23. A very hard and scenic ride that will improve your fitness!!! Good luck; Lewes is a great place to live. |

Worst bit of this journey is the A259 stretch up Rushey Hill out of Newhaven narrow and very busy. To get to Newhaven from Lewes you would take the C7 route through Rodmell and Piddinghoe but then you need to cut up Murray Avenue to avoid the Newhaven ring road. Beware the C7 is an extremely busy and dangerous road weekdays in rush hour, this route would be around 16 miles. At weekends I do the C7 route myself cutting through Kingston village and picking up the cycle path that runs alongside the A27, this path continues to Coldean Lane where it then crosses to become an on road cycle lane until the level then an off road cycle path into the City Centre. There are several other options from Lewes via Ditchling and over the Beacon or over Clayton and follow the cycle path alongside the A23 or even via Hassocks and Hurstpierpoint and then again on to the A23 path, all these loops are nice to do if like me you work weekends. Graham. |
