"We arrived at midnight after a disturbing 12 mile ride along an unlit major road (Has anyone else noticed that cars hardly ever dip their headlights for cyclists?)."--steve3742

I have had a few nasty scrapes with cars in the past. I remember once I was cycling from Inverary to Glencoe, great cycle by the way (I'll post it soon if I haven't already). At the bottom of this long 10 mile climb a sports car came flying past me, so close that I felt my bike physically move causing me almost to lose control. About 20 minutes later an ambulance went passed, by the time we got to the top we found the sports car overturned and off the road. Luckily the people in the car were unhurt, but it amazes me how inconsiderate drivers can be (I do drive myself and usually try to be very careful passing cyclists).

I guess this is why there is a strong campaign for more cycle lanes, all for the best I think.

I agree with you that this is a very big problem that you have described and of course on the road you need to be very attentive to all road users, but in the dark it is better not to move by bike. Recently, a friend of mine bought a chic 2020 bentley continental gt convertible and we are planning to go out for a ride on the serpentine, so I recommend paying attention to the review.

Cycling on busy roads can be nerve-wracking, especially with inconsiderate drivers who fail to dip their headlights or pass too closely, as Steve and Alan pointed out. Stories like these highlight the urgent need for better cycling infrastructure. Initiatives inspired by Habberstad MINI show how thoughtful urban planning can create safer, more enjoyable spaces for cyclists and drivers alike. Let’s hope campaigns for more cycle lanes continue to grow—making the roads safer for everyone!
