Hi Everyone,

I'm a new member and in fairly urgent need of some help and advice.

I have agreed to do the London-Oxford bike ride in a little over 4 weeks. Its 57 miles long, although I'm assured it's quite a chilled out pace with lots of stops (!) but currently I can only manage maybe 15-20 miles in one go, if that.

I went out on my bike last night and did about 9 miles in an hour so I'm also quite slow I think?

I'd appreciate some advice on what sort of distances and times I should be aiming for between now and early July and also any tales of experience from those of you who may have cycled this one before.

I realise that in comparison to the 100's miles many of you manage every week this probably seems a bit pathetic but hey, I'm just starting out!

Thanks,
Nav

Hi Nav

Dont worry it can be done, at a push mind. What i would recommend is to do at least x2 rides a week of 20-25 miles (dont worry about the pace) in the first week. Next week do a 20 miler then a 30 miler (try and leave at least a days rest between rides more if possible). Third week do a 25 miler and a 35 miler (still dont worry about pace/speed). Forth week do a 20 miler easy pace then one long ride of 30-40 miles if possible take all day if you have to (do not do this long ride within 5 days of the event. Final week do not do any long rides maybe 10 miles at the most and make sure you rest at least two days before the event.

Eat plenty of carbs three days leading up to the event (known as carb loading) ie: rice, pasta etc also hydrate well.

On the event day do not blast off at full speed at the beginning as you will be tempted to do.

Ride your own pace and drink plenty at least a litre an hour if possible, take some bannanas or energy bars to nibble on and take rest stops when ever you wish.

Most of all Enjoy.

Thank you so much for the comprehensive advice Dave!

I have been running a couple of times a week at the moment also to improve my general fitness so will now up the cycling activity and hope the combination effect will work ;-)

Training regime here I come!

hi
all you perhaps need to from now on till the 5th is have a practice of at least 10 to 20 miles at an interval rest. however, this is not a race ride you can still still take you time to get there but try to maintain a comfortable pace so you would not get tiered. have a soft drink that contains glucose and bananas cuz you'll be burning a lot energy (sugar). and you will absolutely fine. good luck
