Me and my brother are planning a charity cycle ride for Help for Heroes, to start at Lands End and finish in Portsmouth Navel base for next summer end of May 2012. We have never done anything like this before and wondered if any one has done something similar and/or are able to give us tips and advice. The route has not been finalised yet but should be between 350-400 miles and we aim to achieve this in 3-4 days, depending on skill levels of other people joining us. We use to do off ride riding and trials riding, so we are good at riding and controlling a bike but have never done road racing or anything of that description. We now only ride as commuters doing about 70 miles a week each on the road. We are both very fit though as we hit the gym 3 times a week, box twice a week, football twice a week and go running twice a week. We know a few people who have been seriously affected by what has happened to them in Iraq and Afghanistan and really want to raise some money to help them and want to do something challenging and active. So any help and advice you can give would be amazing. Thank You Stuart |

I have organised a couple of big charity rides myself and its all down to planning plan for everything even the worst case. Make notes and if you are going to use back up crew select them as soon as you can hold meetings and talk through the route and what you want them to do. A spare bike comes in handy if you have a back vehicle or spare wheels also carry other spares. A first aid kit a must. The list is almost endless but as I say planing. Try to get people who live in the area that you intend to ride through to offer advice on various roads and routes. You can leave me a post if you need any more information. |

I recently did Lands End along the south coast to Brightlingsea near Colchester essex including the I.O. Wight, a total of 850 miles. I used to do 85 miles on a sunday and 20 fast miles mid week all including the hills of Essex. But it wasn't enough. Some of the hills are 15%, steepest I saw was 25%. So my advice to you is hill training and more hill training. The best place I cycled was after Bognor, but you'll not be going that far, it's nearly all flat and cycle paths. Again all the best and don't forget hill training. Good luck Len |
