Joined: 05 Jun 2013 Posts: 2 Bike: | hi jeff i was happy to see your post but surprised no one has commented on it yet? i cycle manchester to york last summer and it was completely brilliant. i took the fallowfield loop out to where it joins the transpennine train and simply continued on the transpennine until selby, where it forks and goes north to york. the cycle was great. there is a hard climb after the reservoirs just beyong longdendale but this doesnt last very long. once youve climbed one hill which you have to drag your bike up if you want to stay off the main road youre on top of the pennines for a while and the going is good. i promise you this part is really easy. it takes a while to get to the top of the highest point of the TPT (i cant remember what its called) but it really is worth it. the first night i only got as far as penistone because i left late. its a pretty town but avoid staying there. there are scarcely any places to stay - i stayed above a pub in the grottiest room i have ever seen and they then locked my bike in until midday - so try to get beyond there. the following night i stayed in selby and there are a wealth of guesthouses to stay in there. i had lovely food and a couple of pints there. i really liked that town. the countryside is just amazing. i went through meadows and forests and country lanes that were just perfect. its a really lovely journey. its signposted all the way too. at places it did get a little confusing because there are TPT Walk and TPT Cycle signs and ona couple of occasions i didnt know which i was supposed to take. apparently the TPT walk parts are almost impossoble to cycle in places. so yes, i would recommend. i think you could do it in two days with just one stopover if you leave earlier on the first day than i did. and the second day too, actually. and of course there is the great reward of getting into york town centre when you get there. |
