Just a quick email from Bike Events: NO BIKES ON TRAINS Trans Pennine Express, the train operator between Blackpool and Manchester, has informed us that they will not allow any bicycles on their trains on Sunday 10 July – the day of the ride. Their reason for this is that they have found in previous years that the restricted space available causes friction between cyclists. This could potentially lose £1000's of charity money, terrible organising skills from BC! |

In the past three months I've used Virgin Cross Country, East Coast, Great Western and Scotrail and I've noticed a real refreshing change with train operators, where most staff have been extremely helpful and supportive. But do pre-book the space for your bike......even if this means an extra cycling trip to the nearest mainline station and picking up the free bike passes. We have to accept that the space for bikes is limited and unless you are allocated space in the guards' van (now called "train office"!) your bike can injure passengers if left at the end of carriages on the smaller trains with protruding pedals, handlebars etc. Don't forget our bike spaces are free in this country, having just returned from a cycling trip in Holland, it is around £6 for a pass for your bike and Holland is the greatest cycling nation! Perhaps its the only way they can reduce the numbers of bikes that would be carried on the train... their station car parks have thousands of bikes outside! Could I suggest re: the charity ride that you travel the day before and book into a cheap and cheerful youth hostel somewhere near, you could have a good night out in Manchester and make it a fab weekend. Good luck with the ride. |

Just thought I’d give a friendly heads up to people coming home to Manchester who haven't received the email. Actually like the idea of getting further a field with the trains for a spin, think the Trans Pennine Express will be off the radar for now lol, (I wonder if this is down to the Pennine Express or Blackpool Council come to think of it?). Bet its great doing a tour of Holland though, I’ll have to get round that someday! Many thanks. |
