Route 1 goes along the coast and you could for example head north towards Alnmouth. Route 72 heads west along the Tyne and you could go to Hexham. These maps show the main cycle routes in the area: http://www.gps-routes.co.uk/routes/home.nsf/cyclemap/Northumberland http://www.gps-routes.co.uk/routes/home.nsf/cyclemap/Tyne%20and%20Wear Also if you have a car you could also drive to Kielder reservoir which is about 50 miles away. There is a path the whole way round which is just under 30 miles. Hope this helps :) |

In the end, I did route 72 coming out of Newcastle and then onto route 1 up to Whitley Bay. Fantastic day and lovely route - thank you both very much for your suggestions - I wouldn't have found this route without them. Particularly liked that stunning view of the Priory at Tynemouth as you turn the corner! It was a really good route for a first time visitor as well as both routes were really well signposted. Found a great place for lunch - Sambucca 2 on Union Quay in North Shields - they did 3 courses for £3.95 - you'd never get that in London! Will be up there again and will see if I can get to Kielder as suggested. All the best. |

If not, then the local authority will be pleased to send you one if you pop onto their website and ask, they're free to encourage us onto our bikes and away from traffic. Get the full set, they're always useful! |
