You've probably already researched it but it looks as though some sections are 'on road' although not sure of the quality of road itself. A pretty basic map showing the on road sections: http://www.devon.gov.uk/cycling-leismaps-tarkatrail.pdf I'll be trying it out next week so I'll let you know how I get on if you haven't done it already! Joined: 15 May 2011 Posts: 1 Bike: | We went to Ilfracombe last year & took the bikes, the section we were on (Ilfracombe to Barnstaple) was previously a train line which had been tarmac'd so it was smooth sailing on the MTB. We wern't that adventurous so I can't speak for anything south of Barnstaple. |

Like yourself I was a bit unsure whether it would be suitable. No problem at all. I did take the precaution of fitting Schwalbee Delta Cruiser tyres however. Jammy |

Joined: 27 Feb 2011 Posts: 38 Bike: My Profile | hi the tarka trail is part of the west country way route 3. its a great route, the tarka starts in Barnstable and ends about Petrockstowe. we cycled it on a Dawes & road bike with 21kg of kit,so a road bike withlittle kit on should be fine, most of the route is surfaced even the tunnals are lit. try to pick up a copy of the route as it starts in Bristol and ends at padstow. if you want to extend the route you can follow the camal trail to bodmin. we carried on & cycled back to leicester via Plymouth, Bath & the cotswolds still got a copy of the route if interested. good luck & enjoy the ride. |
