Well here I am ready to embark on a long journey to lose weight and get fit. I have my old mountain bike and have just put some tyres on with a bit less grip so my rolling traction aint to bad, I have plotted out some routes and am only going to start by covering around 3 miles at a steady pace. I will do this for about a week then gradually build up my distance as I am not attempting to go for speed until a long way down the line. The main goal is calories and weight loss.

Hello all well I have been on night shift the past couple of nights so its a 3 mile ride to work and back, I am on last one tonight so its a 3 miler back in the morning then on Tuesday its my 8 mile ride. I am starting to get a steady pace now and can actually manage to get all the way up the hill where I live now. By the end of March I am hoping to be doing around 14 mile a journey then later in the summer I hope to do part of the C2C where it goes from |Sunderland round to Consett and back into Sunderland.

Hey thats fantastic progress. Keep it going. The only problem is, you'll soon not be able to pass a bike shop without looking in the window and wondering whether you're ready for an upgrade yet !! Your garage will become a sort of shrine with all sorts of bike parts hanging from the roof, with spares for every occasion. Its a drug!

Good one well the first thing is a new seat post as with my large frame the one on now has started to bend I noticed it today as I shot round herrington park on a 5 miler with some windy conditions, went over a bump and just thought ohh that does not feel right and when I look the post had bent back a bit so out came the spanner and I turned it the other way and spun the saddle around. down to 20st 4lbs now

Well done just keep proggressing with increasing the miles and you will see the weight fall off. I started cycling last year at around 19 st I am now down to 17!!

You said you have a hill in your area, I used to comute to work which was 7 miles their and 7 miles return and the hill was in the 1st mile at 1st I could not get all the way up but now it is not a problem. When you do have time to spend doing a short loop it is a really good idea to do hill training which is short sharp bursts out the saddle then a more relaxed pace and repeat this up the hill about every 30 seconds. Then roll back down the hill for a well earned break and start again it will really help with stamina and muscle growth in your thighs and butt.

Keep us all posted on how you are getting on. Do you mind if i ask what goal you have set your self and when you want to acheive this by?

One of the main goals is to lose weight and become fitter, I would hope by the end of the summer to do the last part of the C2C route which by the look of the map you can do in a circle by setting off from sunderland and going north then round towards consett then back in towards sunderland again. I am enjoying myself so far as its nice when you can just stop for a couple of mins while you take a drink and then set off again. I have also found the nack of relaxing my legs as I found for some reason I was tensing up but went relaxed there is a lot less pressure on the muscles. I will be looking into upgrading once I have got my fitness level up and I have dropped a good couple of stone, idealy I am looking at getting down to around 17 stone mark witin a 3 year time scale so that I lose the weight gradually rather than all at once just for it to go on again.

Good Plan I have hit my 1st sticking point now so need to look at reducing my food intake a bit (I eat a lot of crap still) it is always better to loose the weight in a slow controlled manor so it does sound like you now all the right things to do. My current motivation is a new child on the way so need to get my energy levels up a little bit more otherwise I swear 2 will burn me out, my new moto is its not a diet its a life change and I am hoping to stick to that theory.

Well well there's 15 miles done today it to 1 hour 50 mins and that includes stopping for drinks and traffic it was a good route from thorney close to seaburn round past the sunderland training ground back through fulwell and then back up past town to home, it was all paths and road so no cross country but was good to keep the legs rotating with a couple of steady downhill sections for a break.

Keep it up jme701, I could tell you a long story about a guy called Charlie who at 40+ stone managed through the help of a TV Doctor to lose his weight, he now travels the world giving slimming talks. I was watching his early progress in March 2005 and at that time although I am no heavyweight 11.5 stone, I did want to stop smoking, through the inspiration I got through watching his diary and determination on TV, on April 27th 2005 I had my last Fag.
If I had not done that I doubt weather I would of been doing what I now do today, C2C last year, WOTR and JOGLE this year, another C2C next year.
Keep up your hard work as your life will be transformed.

Good luck. soren

Cheers for that I have just done another 15 miles today in 1h 41 mins and that was not even pushing hard, my lungs are starting to open up now and my weight is 20st 4lbs, I am not to worried about weight loss at present as I can feel in myself I am getting fitter and I am also starting to change body shape. The best thing I like is that on the flats or slight downhills you can give yourself a bit of recovery time and if you want to stop for a drink of water you can, then just set off at a steady pace again. When I have been going for the first year I will have hopefully saved enought to get a upgrade in bike and my fittness should be at a reasonable standard by then so I can challenge longer distances over the day. But one step at a time.

Excellent thread, and given me a boost!

I started gently with the cycling last year on an old MTB (with square bearings - Well, I had recovered it from a skip) after 25 years out the saddle. I had totaly lost my confidence cycling and was not going to fork out for a bike I was not going to use......

As a lad I used to cycle everyday and everywhere, and longer journeys were just a big adventure. However, after a couple of really spectacular accidents (I actually wrote of a car in one spill) and getting out the habit, I developed a real fear of riding.

Anyway, last year I started getting into cycling again, as a method of loosing some weight and just improving my fitness (or remedying lack of fitness). Not sure what weight I was, as it was off the scale - so 20+ somewhere.

A few months ago, got a new bike, as I was not getting on with the MTB. The handlebars were in the wrong place for me, was fed up of being covered in what ever was lying on the road and just wanted something that was more "me". I bought an old style hardtail tourer with all the bits (mud guards, pannier, spherical bearings, etc) and real old style sit up and beg handlebars (think modern, slightly pimped Pashley).

Love it! Confidence rising, and new distances covered.

Whilst lately my weight has not been dropping (was 19-7, 8 weeks later 19-3 and seemingly steady), I am not down hearted about that as, I have overcome several challenges, both physical, but just as important, psychological.

Distance increasing on weekly basis (done 26 Miles twice), now tackled hills that I considered not for me (with plans to tackle others) but also just done the best average speed this evening that I have yet managed.

Taking it steady, and working on 3 things separately: Distance, severity of hills and average speed, with the hope that weight loss will be an eventual result.

Meanwhile - enjoying the countryside and interesting aches and pains.

Nice to know there are other people out there with own individual experiences, that whilst totally different, are situations I can relate to an I can use as encouragement.

Big thanks to you for sharing.

a swift 15 miles murton and back on monday, with spd's and they do make a difference to the ride. I have them on a fairly lose setting so I can unclip with ease and I check the bolts after about 30 mins if I have had to unclip several times due to traffic, I am still around the 20st mark but am getting fitter by the day.

Just a cheap set of shimanos off ebay 19 quid and got muddy fox shoes from sports direct for 20 quid, they my not be top of the range and I may only ride an apollo xc 26 from halfords that cost 100 quid but I think its not all about what you ride and how much money you have to spend, I like to ride and if I can enjoy myself on a budget then so be it, I will never be racing down the side of ben nevis or needing supension that travels for miles. I enjoy myself and have just got an old saracen 7005 frame off a friend and will do that up on a budget and have just got a stem and hanlebars from chain reaction for 20 quid in the clearance section. So what if my budget does not streach to thousands thats life and as long as I enjoy it with others who think the same then thats just the way I like it. I did my 3 miles into work tonight and will ride home in the sunshine at 8am knowing that when I hit the bank on Durham road I can finally get up it without hitting the granny ring and after a sleep get up and enjoy a good ride to south shields and back covering the 20 odd miles at a steady pace and take in the views and think at the end of the day I enjoyed that and look forward to my next ride out.

A man after my own heart I got the exact same shoes found them really good and I found cleats on eBay for a fiver from rutland cycling that are the same as shimano just cheaper :-)

I am starting my own project ATM and am looking to spend as little as possible hence my thread about bottom bracket removal without the special tool.
I must admit I do like my xmas present though got a Chris Boardman Team road bike! Well chuffed it looks beautiful especially at the welds, they have smoothed them right out to mimic carbon frame at a fraction of the cost and I am sure their is some minimal difference in drag too

hope you enjoyed your night at work set to be a good day tomorrow down south but we are dues snow over the weekend :(

Hi well done so far i was 50 and a couch potato however according to bmi index just slightly over the recommendations for my weight and height however did exactly what you are doing small miles at a time and now regularly do 30 plus miles .my only advice would be do it for the fitness and general well being i haven't lost a single pound however know i am toned as my clothes are all took big. I also eat better plus joined a gym .
I would highly recommend you get a hybrid as that will make it a pleasureable event plus you will enjoy doing longer and longer rides.
I bought a trek off ebay cheap as it was in a state and did it up plus have a full carbon race bike too .
sometbing i learnt the hardway was hydration additives they help enormously rather than expensive sports drinks i use SIS stops you getting that drained feeling.
