Adding gears

Joined: 01 Mar 2009 Posts: 12 Bike: My Profile | Good day all, my road bike will go up to 56Km but I get no pressure after that, can I add another gear onto the cog, I don't want to loose my lowest gear yet, or do I need to loose one to gain one? |

Joined: 16 Jan 2009 Posts: 498 Bike: My Profile | not so simple, i'm afraid. how many rear cogs have you got? 7, 8, 9 or 10? an additional cog generally means a new rear derailleur and a new shifter too. These things are generally in sets. Usually a new chain will be required. a 10 cog chain is different to an 8 cog chain, for instance. They are narrower. What brand and range are your current gears? I think you;'ll get better specific advice with this info. If you are wanting to pedal at speeds higher than 35 mph (56kph) ...how regularly is this? Also, a set of 10 may require a new wheel, depending on the current spoke offset. |

Joined: 01 Mar 2009 Posts: 12 Bike: My Profile | Thank you for the reply, sounds like a trip to the bike shop at some point. I don't hit the top speed to often at the moment but want to build on my speed. I think I'll get my climbing legs back before I go into a higher cog set. |
