ps: i got my last bike from Halfords and its been excellent and i see they do CBoardman bikes which i like the look of!

hello . .

I have just bought a new bike myself , so I know what a mine field it is out there.

First of all I will explane what I bouhgt and why, I went for a trek 1.1 road bike , I got this for £400 at evans cycles lakeside, it was a good deal as other places have this bike at £500 , so ask in store for a discount I got 10%.

i picked the trek as it was a entrey level bike which looks more inter, I bought myself a set of bontrager carbon forks for £120 which makes for a better ride and is also lighter.

I then bought a good pair of shoes and pedals which make the most of any road bike.

Total cost around £620 . I then got a few other bits, shorts top, and stuff...

I picked this bike because to get anything which is clearly in a class above I found that I was going to be spending over my budget, close to £1200.. This does everything I want it to. I have been told from another shop, that the next level for me would really be a full carbon bike..

I am not saying to go and get this bike but just to let you know why i picked it..

Things that I would look out for

Light frame ,a must
Carbon forks , a must
good make group set, even the cheaper sets from top brands are still good as tech is passed down from the higher end...
Weight of the bike.
Size & fit ( not all bike may fit you)
Guarantee, the trek has life time on frame and 1 year on wheels.

also try and leave some money in your budget for a good pair of cycle shoes and pedals, these make the most diff ..

I looked at halfords, as I have bought bike there in the past but I was not impressed with there roads there is better out there.

If I was going to do it again I would stick with the trek but I would opt for the 1.2 as it comes with carbon forks, and a slightly better groupset, i would recommend these bikes and have a good guarantee too..

As for me I plan on using this bike for the rest of the summer and the comming winter, with the hope to get a full carbon bike for next year and keep this as my bad weather bike...

Feel free to ask any questions if you local pop round and have a go..

Andy . .

Hey,

I was in your position one month ago and sympathise greatly :) There's an incredible range out there and I think for your first bike it's definitely a tough decision to make. My budget was less than yours and I spent ages looking around the local shops in Glasgow and chatting to staff.

They all seemed to be in agreement that your first road bike is an investment and worth the money. I was looking at a good entry level bike with exactly what's been said above (light frame - e.g. Aluminium, carbon forks, decent componentry etc). In the end I went for a Specialised Allez (£499). So far I'm absolutely loving it!

Other considerations around my price range (£500-600) were the Giant Defy, Genesis Aether (I think) and the Specialised Allez, the model up from mine. Definitely agree with the above that pedals and shoes are a must, this will likely take the cost up another £100 approximately.

Best advice would be to go out there and talk to the staff. I found their advice really helpful and this made me more confident in my choice in the end. Are you around Glasgow? If so I can pass on the names of the local bike shops in the area (unless of course you already have them...)

Best of luck!

Gav :)

i have just purchased the Specialiased Secteur Elite, after trying a few bikes in this price range, the secteur set up is very comfortable for long rides and carbon front forks on the test rides were very good compared to the basic secteur which is all aluminium and had alot more vibration. it's £1000, but money well spoent IMHO
