Hi All

I was wondering if anyone knew of a good cycle route coast to coast from Whitehaven to Redcar. I live in Teesside so would perfer to finish local!

Thanks Mark

Hi Mark,
Check out http://www.redcarrangers.co.uk/Events.html
which starts in Whitehaven and finishes in Sunderland and since it is an organised ride you can just sign on and forget the planning headaches.

Hi Mark,
Second of your options is as follows
Take NCN71 out of Whitehaven then onto the NCN7 near Penrith then follow this across the country to Consett, turn right at Consett from NCN7 onto NCN14 until you reach Durham. Stay on the NCN14 to Haswell then turn South on the joint route NCN1 and NCN14 to Castle Eden then take NCN1 into Middlesbrough and out the other side to Redcar.

for your options.

That sounds the right route. Hard work near Rookhope if that is included.

However for the Boro bit I would much prefer to stay on the NCN14 to Hart for the coastal route to Hartlepool then ignoring the NCN 14 and just coasting it to Seaton Carew and through to Port Clarence for the Transporter Bridge.

I'm not sure which is shorter but would feel this one is quicker.
Route 1 gets too 'built up' and stop start for me.

Hi Albion,
Yeah, nice call - that looks good as well - I lived in Billingham for 25 yrs as a kid and Seaton Carew was "The Seaside" for me - nice coastal road but can have heavy articulated traffic on a narrow road around Seal Sands and you need to ensure the Transporter is actually open on the day - high winds will cause closure and a longish detour inland to get over Newport Bridge into Middlesbrough and the riverside cycle path.
I went on a Skyride recently whilst up visiting my folks and it went from the Trannie to Castle Eden / Wynyard Park and back - it was built up but not a bad run - get to go over the Tees Barrage too!

Yes there can be traffic on that non cycle route road.
Its just that the two or so times I've done the other route solo I've found the built up section far too ponderous and certainly not worth seeing.

A girl's first words unprompted doing Middlesbrough to Ryhope I bumped into (on that weird confusing two route bit when going north at I think South Hetton) described the Boro north bit as pretty bad.

Next time I'm along that route 1 way I'll more than likely just join a busy road unless time and energy are on my side.

Also note that Hartlepool's refurbished marina historic quay is en-route.
Again with time one can just follow route 14 at least to Cowpen Bewley.
From there it is again as much a mess as the route 1 so a bit of road is certainly to be considered.

Guys

Thanks so much for all the advice. We are new to cycling so had no idea that these national cycle routes were even there! Are they easy to follow or would we need a map?

On another note we are trying a route i found on this site to cycle to Redcar using the river track. Looking forward to it.

Thanks again

Mark

the route via Hartlepool / Seaton Carew is defo best scenic route and Transporter is excellent experience if not been on a suspended roadway ferry before - been along the riverside trail to Redcar with Skyride :) easy peasy - enjoy what ever route you decide - at the end of the day, cycling for any reason, to any destination by any means is worth it :)

Much the same except you are more likely to be riding into the wind.
