Hi, I'm looking for a road bike in between £500 and £1000. It needs to be suitable for long bike rides like the Isle of Wight challenge (70 miles) which I am hoping to participate in next year. If you could also mention some good bike clothes and bike shoes that would be appreciated.
Thank You,
Dylan

i'm a fan of the Boardman range.
Good quality, well kitted out bikes at reasonable prices.
Unfortunately, you have to buy it at Halfords, but you can't have everything!
they range from £400 or so to well over £1,000, so there will be one for you.

See if you can find a friend or acquaintance with one. Halfords in their infinite wisdom do not allow a test ride.

ive been thinking of getting a road bike, and looking at a ribble, there are a good few to choose from and were voted best for under a grand in magazines, have a look at them too, but just have a good look round before u choose one, and know what your buying.

Dylan, I have just bought a road bike for the first time and received loads of advice. Finding a good bike shop with staff who know what they are talking about is a good starting point. I was advised to go for a mid priced bike up to £1,000 until you really get in to it. The Trek 1.2 or Trek in general are good bikes very positive reviews. But Specialised and Giant are just as good. I ended up buying a Cannondale CAAD series over the Trek, mainly due to the fact that you can up the spec and the frame will cope with the change and last. One of my friends bought the Trek 1.2 and is very pleased with his purchase and has put some folk on much pricier bikes to shame.

As for clothes, there is too much on the market and most people will tell you to buy the upper market range. I have bought kit from Sports Direct and to be honest some of the kit has been ok. But I would buy a Bib as it offers much greater comfort, better than shorts.

Thanks Daz, that is really helpful. I have been looking at the cannondale caad 8 sora. I have a few friends with treks and they said that they are really good quality bikes and really good value for money.

2011 sales are just coming up so you might well get a Dawes Galaxy - I got mine a year ago, for around £950, and it's beautiful - perfect for all day in the saddle, touring, with panniers - recommended! 70 miles a day no problem, 100 if you really wanted.

Reading through the posts I have to agree with the Ribble or Boardman recommendations. Both do really good entry level bikes. The Boardmans especially give you a lot of good kit for the cash.

Also have a look on Wiggle. they sell off last season stock quite frequently. You usually get higher spec running gear if you steer clear of the big names like Trek. A lot of times you;re only paying for the badge as there are only limited numbers of companies that build frames in Europe so they're often pretty much the same frame with a different paint scheme.

For that kind of money you could get a near top end full carbon road bike like a S-works specialized I have bought three bikes of ebay saving tons and also as long as you buy right they are usually in near condition
