My Profile

Hi there,

I need help with the subject title please.

I’ve started getting into cycling over the last month or so (used to do a fair bit of commuting up until 5 years ago). But I’m doing decent runs with a few 20 mile round routes and a VERY hilly 40 mile round route. I was out on Sunday with the mega 42 mile’er through the Pennines. My legs were good up until I was half way up the summit (20 miles in), then I couldn’t go any further.... When I jumped back on the bike, every 5 turns of the peddles my legs couldn’t do any more (literally dead weights), just about got off the bike after the 5th attempt to sit down for 2 minutes then had to push the bike to the top lol – wasn’t happy! Extreme lactic acid build ups, and on the decent of the summit my leg muscles just had crazy cramp.

I’ve heard mixed messages how to counter act this – from heavy diets of Beef and eggs (vitamin B5/B12), to plenty of bananas (potassium), and the more feasible one of a lack of oxygen in the blood! I heard years ago that blood temperatured water gets oxygen around the blood much faster than cold water, and it does seem to do the trick – and potassium and magnesium (bananas and walnuts etc etc) gives you less muscle acts and pains, but it doesn’t act fast enough! Even when I’ve already got high levels of potassium and magnesium in the system. I dunno? it must be down to me being a new’en at cycling again - and I just need more time on the bike?

But any tips / technics are much appreciated,
Many thanks in advance!

Apologies if I'm only suggesting what you already do. One thing I have found helps with this is making sure that I keep a high heart rate up the hills to ensure high circulation. I have no idea if there is any scientific support for this but it works for me. Don't try to be strong. Get in a lower gear than you think you can manage and pedal faster. Of course once you are struggling in first gear this no longer works!
