We're doing it to raise money for a charity, so we want to do it on the cheap, which means camping. Neither of us have panniers or anything like that, but we saw that Argos have a trailer for under a hundred pounds. So, any suggestions? |

Personally I would recommend going with rear panniers with maybe a small handlebar bag tp keep essential things in like a bike lock, mobile phone, money, tools, maps etc. I've tried a trailer and it's hard work as you end up carrying much more than you need. We did the northern section of the Pennine cycleway last year on our MTBs, coming back down the coast & castles route to Newcastle and loved it. You can keep the weight and space of your equipment down quite easily if you're not going to have any other support. The best ways we've found to save weight and space is to use a small cooking stove that uses fuel tablets rather than having a gas stove with bottles etc. We also made a big sleeping bag out of 2 thin duvets with velcro edges which is great for sharing body heat. It can be separated and rolled up smaller than any sleeping bag i've ever owned. A Thermarest is essential for a comfy nights sleep, a 3/4 length one is sufficient, light and very compact too. Hope you enjoy your ride. . . . . . the midges certainly will. |
