Hi

1st post so a big hello to you all.

I'm hoping to get out on some longer bike trips this summer, and would like a bit of practicle advise please and have a few questions if I may.

I intend to cycle the Stour Valley path in Suffolk, from Newmarket to Harwich, a trip of around 65 miles on mostly paths as I understand it, on my mountain bike.

How long should I factor in for this length of bike ride? 1 night out, 2 days cycling?

How far would you expect to get in a days off road bike ride?

I find my handle bars grate a little on my hands, should I get new handles or buy gloves?

I'm looking for something to protect my elbows and knees grom a graze should I have an accident, but have never liked the way pads and the elastic cut in and feel uncomfortable.

Where can I get those 'sleeve' type things that offer some protection?

Thanks for advise,

Paul

firstly, cycling gloves provide padding exactly where you need it, and prevents shock and pressure pain to your hands. Summer gloves are fingerless, and have a lightweight backing to keep the heat down.

miles in a day.
This is a very open question, particularly off-road.
I've not done this route, but as i was born and raised in Suffolk, i dont think big hills are really going to be an issue!
It is certainly no more than a two day ride. Doable in a single day.
15 miles in the morning, good pub lunch break, 15 miles in the afternoon. 4 hours a day in the saddle at average speed of 7.5mph (a fast jog)
8 hours in the saddle at the same speed to do it in a day.
This is a very achievable average speed, even off-road.

as for sleeves / padding etc, no idea!

Thanks for your input.

Now Im tempted to have a crack at it in 1 day, might do a couple of mid length rides propir to this, but good to know it's doable. :)

Glove now on my to get list!

I'll take a look at Vanillabikes too.

Cheers again,

Paul
