I suppose this happens to everyone now and again but I thought I would let you know because if you are visiting Lincoln Station you could be forgiven for thinking that you may have been teleported back to the 1970s whilst there. To a time when British Rail ran the railways for their own convenience. Let me explain further. Today I decided I would cycled along Sustrans Rout 64 from the village I live in South of Newark on Trent to Lincoln and planned to catch the train back. The cycle ride was brilliant and I will add the route later. The train journey never took place....!

I bought a ticket at Lincoln well in advance and waited for the train. A single carriage train pulled up fifteen minutes later and off stepped the guard already huffing and puffing and shaking his head. It was a little busy so I waited in turn to board the back of the train and he said, 'you'll have to get on last with that.' I was happy to wait, and to be honest, I expected to get on last anyway. Everyone boarded the train and then he said to me, 'you can't get on with that we're full.' He then promptly shut the door and the train went. Despite complaining to the conductor on the platform and the manager in her office neither could give me any explanation except the carriage of bikes is subject to availability. Yes, I know that, the carriage of passengers is too. Additionally, the Manager couldn't even guarantee that I could get on the next train because, 'it's not up to her' and she couldn't even give me a refund because, 'that's up to the Ticket Manager.' The Ticket Manager wanted a full explanation why I should have a refund and why I didn't get on the train....incredible.!

Faced with no alternative and no guarantee of getting on the next train I had no choice but to cycle the 25 miles home. Every person I spoke to at Lincoln Station and especially the guard on the train could quite easily have stepped straight back in to the 1970s and joined British Rail without any training at all.

Hi,
We too had a similar problem in Preston. My mate and I were meeting our group in Chorley and decided to go by train as the planned ride was going to be a hard and long one, plus we'd have had to do an extra 16 miles to get home on top of that.
The train pulled in and on we got, only to be shouted at by a 'Rail man' who was sat down and shouting at us to get off and go to the next carriage. (We'd been told to get on that one by the platform guard?) My mate got off and the doors shut before I could get off. She was left on the platform and I was left to have a blazing argument with this guy, he was swearing and making a right scene then told me to get off the train at the next station, Horwich. I stood my ground and stayed put till I got Chorley.
On arrival at Chorley, The guard AND driver came to see what the trouble was. When I tried to explain what had happened , this nasty guy butted in abruptly. I'm glad to say the driver told him to get off his train and wait for the next one, and apologized to me for the trouble.
In the meantime, My mate was still at Preston wondering what to do . She got the next train and all turned out OK eventually. but I was amazed that this rail man, thought he could speak to us in such a bad manner, swearing etc when he had no right to get involved. There was plenty of space in all carriages and other passengers were disgusted by the guys attitude and language.
I bet he wouldn't have been like if I was a fella?
