I would be very grateful for any advice on routes, campsites, etc. I haven't started to plan any routes yet as I may end up doing a lot of work for nothing if I find someone who has already ridden this route, or the other way round (Calais to Portugal). Any comments will be much appreciated. Andy |

As you live in Portugal presumably you know the country reasonably well so may have your own ideas for this part of the route. Personally, I'd probably take an inland route - up towards Evora, Castelo Branco and Guarda because I think this part is both prettier and would be much quieter in terms of traffic. However, camping options may be more limited. From Portugal to Spain, the most direct route would be from Guarda through towards Salamanca, Burgos and the Basque Country. I've not ridden this route but have driven it - and the old main road pretty much parallels the motorway. This will get busier as you go further east. I think some of this could be pretty boring (not much out there) but it depends whether speed is a priority. If you've got the time, I'd head more directly north to the coast and then follow it along - you only need to cross the Picos de Europa on the way! With France, it depends again on whether you want the scenic route or the direct route! I hope these very general comments help. If you've got more specific questions please let me know. So much depends on your time limit - and how far you plan to ride each day. Cheers, Huw |
