Hi

I am about to do my first 50 mile trip and wondered what are the best things to take with you to drink - 2 bottles of water or 1 water and 1 of some energy drink? Can anyone recommend anything that help to boost energy when going through a low patch?

I would take at least 2 bottles of energy drinks and take plenty of food to eat as well such as energy bars, bananas and sweets for an instant sugar hit!!

Make sure you eat properly before the ride as well and keep drinking throughout the ride, not just when you feel thirsty

Is it an organised ride you are doing?

making sure you are well hydrated up to two days before the event has a remarkable effect.
Don't rely on a couple of pints of water first thing to get you hydrated.

trail mix and raisins, as well as bananas are good for the back pockets if you are not into energy bars and gels

are you doing 50 miles non-stop, or stopping off for lunch, etc?

although the energy drinks are a must. (the mix yourself powders from SIS are good) i personally like a bit off water as well. All can get a bit sickly if you're just sucking dow the energy stuff. But that's just me!

Hi all

Thanks for the great advice. I'm doing the London to Cambridge ride so there will be i think 2-3 stops on route. I usually cycle to work a couple of times a week which is 15 miles each way so find water is ok (even without any breakfast in side me!) But 50 miles is a new proposition for me.

if you are happy doing 30 miles a day twice a week, albeit split in two, then 50 miles shouldn't be as tough as you might think.

The atmosphere on the day puts a lot of miles in your legs.

I did the London / Cambridge as a teenager (in the 80's!) so memories are a bit hazy. Dont think my brother or I had any water, and stopped somewhere for a coke, some crisps and a Mars bar! top nutritional advice there!

Hi,

I did the lon to camb last year and am planning it again this year, I took a couple of energy drinks and some water and bananas and cereal bars. it was all very heavy and i still brought some home/dished it out to people en route!

I think the SIS drinks are awesome I have been using them for 4 months now and have noticed they give a more constant energy boost over the miles than things like lucozade. I generally use a bottle of SIS drink and a bottle of water in seperate bottles. maybe 2 cereal bars just in case.

hope you do ok and maybe ill see you at the finish!...

p.s. the london to cambridge ride in july for BHF has about 10 refreshment stops. you can pick and choose when and where you want to have a break.
