Winter Cycling

Joined: 17 Dec 2012 Posts: 4 Bike: | I thought I would start cycling up as a way of keeping fit. I work 9-5pm so figured I d go for a 1 hour cycle in the mornings starting at 6.20am. So far in 6 rides I have had 4 punctures and a big fall from black ice meaning I have had to walk home 5 out of 6 attempts. I bought some tyre kevlon tape which seems to have solved the punctures but now I am nervous about falling. Is early morning rides in the winter just not a thing cyclists do because of the dangers |

 Joined: 25 Feb 2010 Posts: 372 Bike: My Profile | Hi Ice will be an issue this time of the year no matter what tyres you have. It will be worse first thing in the morning due to the overnight chill. Dont let it get you down. Might be best to cycle off road when there is ice about if you have that option or cycle later in the day again if you have the option. Regarding punctures - there are many pucture resisant tyres that wont slow you down too much if the kevlar tape doesnt solve it all. There are many threads on this forum on the subject already. I carry a pucture repair kit and 1 spare inner tube. First puncture I swap the inner tubes, 2nd puncture fix it. but since I got schwalbe marathon plus tyres I havent needed either. |

Joined: 17 Dec 2012 Posts: 4 Bike: | Ironically I was getting punctures through the grit on the road, the tape has solved that and I just need to be a bit cleverer with deciding if its safe to cycle or not that early. Thanks for the reply I really like cycling in the morning no traffic birds singing etc as I said just need to plan it more I think |
