Depends on where you are cycling, how easy you can get help, day or night, and so on.

You say you are well aware of the kit list so...!?

This is what I always carry:

Cannondale hex key combo
patch kit
1 spare tyre
1 tube
chain
cables (1 brake, 1 derailleur)
spare brake pads

It weighs about 1.5kg.

Also, do you feel confident about changing your tube perhaps? If not, then don't bother taking the items which you may not be using them. Inetad a lock will do the job!

Hi Macey
Welcome to cycling!

I think Vandad's list is a bit extreme (imho) but I do agree with him that one should only take spares and tools that you are comfortable using.

my bike bag contains: (there is a thread called "whats in your bike bag")
spare inner tube
puncture kit
pump
multitool (with chainbreaker)
tyre levers
spare chain link or 2
puncture kit contains extra large patches for repairing rips in tyre walls
first aid kit
Mars bar :-)

For events you can probably get away with carrying less as there are generally repair stations and assistance along the way including medical assistance, but check what the event provides first.

Good luck.
