Long climbs need focus and strength. I always make sure I do my stretches before I attempt long climbs and have eaten and drunk appropriately before I head out. When you are approaching a hill make sure to be in a lower gear than you need to be. I usually try to remain seated when climbing, usually in the lowest 3 gears, then alternate to standing in a slightly higher gear on the steeper parts. Ultimately you mustn't push yourself too hard at the start or you will deplete you're energy reserves and struggle later on. Just keep doing as many hills as possible and you will quickly notice an improvement.

no substitute for getting out there and pounding away at a few hills.
Gym squats, lunges and toe raises and depressions can help too.
there is a technique to pedalling too like you are trying to remove muck off your sole at the bottom of the downstroke works best when clipped into the pedal.

good luck!

Hi
Its basically pulling the pedal back up as you push down with the opposite leg.
It works!

Thats the one Enesem!
it works to help maintain pedal momentum for the upstroke.
If you are only pushing down on the pedal you are loosing the momentum for the next revolution.
Another way to think of it is to drop your heel on the downstroke.

Good luck and have fun out there.
Buster.

Excellent. Many thanks.

Do either of you know any good (but cheap of course) books about techniques and not just for climbing!

Only one I have read is Ned Overend's (yes really is his name) Mountainbkie like a champion - - my wife bought it for me - must have been on sale. Vaguely interesting and largely autobiographical.

If I want to know something I usually just look it up online. I have no special site that I go to by default.

All really good advice. Practice taking the same hills, you will soon notice it being a bit easier each time. Try and remain relaxed, focus on steady, mooth breathing and get into a grove - even the biggest hills come to an end. Every pedal stroke is one done and out of the way.....
