Just got back from a 5 day tour with a group, starting and ending in Edinburgh, and doing about 50 miles a day, on a Specialized Sirrus Comp, with a 9 speed rear cassette of 12 to 25 teeth.

I really missed my old mountain bike gearing on some of the steeper bits, though never actually had to push, so am considering a new cassette. I'd happily lose the 12 teeth gear for something with more at the other end, as I rarely ever get into 3-9 gear. Having said that, I rarely need to use 1-1 either. (if I've got these the wrong way round, I'm sure you get the gist)

Any suggestions for a replacement cassette???

Sorry not a reply, but another question. Did you ride with the standard 28c tyres?

we did the route Edinburgh, Stirling, Killin, Perth, Glenrothes, Edinburgh.

I kept on the standard 28c tyres, but there was very little tread left on the rear by the end of the week. Given I got the bike in January this year, I've nearly worn out the rear tyre in 9 months.

Next time I do something like this, I'm planning to put on 'grippier' tyres, but for the riding I tend to do, I'm happy with the tyres it came with.

I agree that the 28's are good for general riding, but I have been looking for something with more grip, for the more challenging roads and winter riding.

It's been difficult to work out what will fit without buying, so I have taken the plunge and purchased a pair of ' Continental Tour Ride' 700 x 32.

I pick them up tomorrow, so I will let you know if they fit.

Hi Wolfboy,

did you get the new tyres, and have they been any good?

Simon,

Yes I got the tyres, and they fit fine. Used them on Sunday for the Isle Wight ride and they were great on the road and the last few miles were gravel, so they were ideal. I thnk I will keep them on for the winter!

It may be possible to fit the 34*700 as there is still a fair gap around the tyre, but without buying and trying I can't be sure.

Regards

Martin
