So my daughter and I are on an Ireland tour next summer and wanted to spend a few days in Dublin. For whatever reason, I'm thinking it easier to see the city via mass transit than by bike so the thought is to get as close to the city as practical and then ditch the bikes at a hotel and proceed into Dublin without them...picking them up on the way out of town. It looks like we're coming into town from Tullamore to the West and are looking for some low volume...bike friendly roads to get in closer.
Would appreciate your thoughts...also the 'must-see' that we need to include would be great!!!
Thanks
Jeff

Some lovely roads to cycle around the Tullamore area. I would higly recommend cycling along the banks of Grand Canal which runs from Dublin to Shannon Bridge via Tullamore. Very quiet and peaceful cycle with plenty to see while cycling on the towpaths. I have cycled from Tullamore in both directions along the Grand Canal and it is an easy cycle on a mountain bike.

Hi Jeff the way to go for a pleasant cycle is along the banks of The Grand Canal it flows right through Tullamore. Out of frustration a couple of years ago maybe three I decided to investigate a safe cycle route from Dublin to Kinvara south of Galway city. I bought a guide To the Grand Canal of Ireland from Ducas The Heritage Service in co-operation with The Inland Waterways Service, it served me well on my journey. there are a few gates to negotiate but the route is virtually traffic free. Definetly recommend it. The Dart station (light Rail)at The Red Cow is very convenient to a number of reasonably priced hotels, Bewleys, Fitzgeralds and a couple more and will have you in the centre of Dublin in less than 30mins. If you wish Iwill get the Guide for you and post it on or maybe you can purchase it on line. I have other really exciting European cycle trips I have done always traffic free. I f you are interested contact me at email. ckdunne@eircom.net

Hi Folks,
I'm planning on cycling from Dublin to Galway next week, but on a road bike rather than a mountain bike. I'm planning to go along the Grand Canal at least until I'm out of Dublin, but how long will I be able to keep going before the surface gets too rough?
Are there any well-maintained sections along the route where I could rejoin the canal route?
