| I often cycle to work in Gorgie from Roslin and I'm 'really' nervous about cycling on roads, so tend to avoid them whenever possible. If you want to follow the road, your route is probably as good as any - through Morningside, down Merchiston Ave, onto Polwarth Drescent which takes you onto the canal, which you can follow to Fountainbridge. From there, Gardiners Crescent, Morrison St. through Canning Street to Shandwick Place, up Stafford St, round to Dean Bridge. In saying that, there are loads of alternatives, but this way is probably about as 'quiet' as you can get.
If you don't mind a bit of a detour - a couple of miles but on more paths/tracks - how about taking a left at the Fairmile In, then left again down the path that takes you through Caiyside at the bottom of Swanston. Very quiet roads. You can take that to Dreghorn Link, over the wee roundabout and basically stay on the pavement right down Dreghorn Link, Redford Road down to Colinton village. From there, it's onto the Water of Leith all the way to Dean Village, apart from a very short section at Roseburn. This is probably two or three miles longer than by road, but avoids all busy roads and city centre. The Water of Leith Walkway is really sheltered too, so much nicer in wet/windy weather. No use for a road bike but no problem with a mountain bike... not sure about hybrids and stuff like that.
