It was an excellent journey, over 2 days (stayed overnight bed n brekkie in Falkirk) and weather was nice, think it was in June. Flat, obviously, the whole way, had to come off the canal at some points however as it went underground but the links on this thread show exactly how few times that occurred. All in all a great cycle, only got up a sweat when the group I was cycling with decided to "pit the foot doon" for a mile or so but otherwise a nice leisurely cycle. It can be done in a day no problem, just start earlyish from Glasgow and I can assure you the views and countryside between the west and the central belt and then onwards to west lothian are breathtaking. A few eateries also, special mention to the Indian restaurant en route - we never went in but just marvelled at the audacity of the owners who cited it in the middle of nowwhere, next to the canal and passing trade consisting of cyclists, walkers and barge travellers, and possibly a few stray canoeists! We had packed lunches, sat on riverbank and enjoyed the early summer weather, met quite a few cycling groups going the other direction, and I would recommend it to anyone. I'm considering cycling it this easter weekend, if the weather stays fine. Buffy |

Getting to Falkirk was great. just had some muddy spots but it was a good cycle. stopped for a bit the rest of the journey is bumpy. This will take you a wee bit longer and more mud on the road. This is great cycle. no hills and if you do it on a nice day great scenery good most of the way. |

There may be few cars on Princes Street, but the buses are breeding, and there are tram lines to contend with (although no trams for the foreseeable!) |

I started at Anniesland (Lock27 pub) and got to Edinburgh City Centre in about 5/6 hours later, with a 30/40 mins stop off at the Falkirk Wheel for my lunch. It is a great cycle run to do, as its completely traffic free and flat all the way as well. It has some really nice scenery on route too! I joined the canal path and just after Maryhill followed the signs to Bishopbriggs on the canal and then you see signs to the Falkirk Wheel. Basically you pass Bishopbriggs, Kirtintilloch, Kilsyth and just keep going and when you hit the Falkirk Wheel (2.5 hrs) go up hill and join the Union Canal and keep going. As you join the Union Canal there s a good tunnel right at the start and a few high aquaducts to cross over. (ps: i got the train back from Haymarket!!) I hope you get on fine, happy cycling!!! :)) |

I've read the posts that the path can be muddy and a mountain bike is needed, but is it even possible in late January/early February even if it isn't covered in snow? Cheers folks Chooks |

Some sections are pretty muddy, depending on time of year, but no real problems. |

Joined: 01 Jan 2012 Posts: 2 Bike: | I sometimes get the train through from Edinburgh to Glasgow and cycle back along the canal. roughly 60 miles . Stop at Falkirk wheel for a coffee and change onto the Union Canal. Another wee coffee stop is at Auchinstarry ( near Twechar). A wee burger van but very good. Takes me around 5 hours ( ave 12 mph on Mountain bike) Good luck Robert |

Joined: 11 Feb 2012 Posts: 1 Bike: | Hi everyone. Im also looking at cycling to Glasgow to Edinburgh. From what I can make out there are two NCN routes...The 754 via Falkirk and the 75 through Airdrie. I understand there has been work carried out by the railway companies around the Airdrie area. Does anyone know if this route is now fully open. I have a Hybrid bike so its a bit unforgiving over the bumps. Can anyone tell me the condition of the paths on the 754 and the 75 and how long roughly each route takes. Thanks for your time and replies, James. |
