And I found here some answers on my questions before my trip. So I want to thank all people here for support and kindness. My route: Edinburgh - Perth - Lairg - Bettyhill - Thurso - Orkney islands - Thurso - Cape Wrath - Drumbeg - Ullapul - Lewis - Harris - Skye - North&South Uist - Barra - Oban - Lochgilphead - Islay - Tarbert - Auchenbreck - Glasgow - Edinburgh. Some pics (all made during this tour): http://gusarer.net/fset.php?year=2011&month=7 Roman. |

I saw your post, and found it interesting. In fact, I'm planning something like that for next summer, and I was wondering if you could suggest about accommodation, routes and all that kind of very useful things. So, I'd appreciate if you have a minute and pass me a few tips Cheers, Corrado |

But from Edinburgh to Perth, from Inverness to Lairg and from Glasgow to Edinburgh I used train and think it was right choice. I hadn't any clear route to travel for whole month, only idea of counterclockwise trip from Edinburgh via Orkney, north and outer Hebrides, Skye and Islay then returning to Edinburgh. There are plenty of ferries between mainland and islands. You can find all information at http://www.calmac.co.uk (they don't work on Orkney ferry though). In every office you can get a small booklet with all timetables. I hadn't GPS or any other navigation device - only compass and paper maps. It wasmore than enough to have a map with 5-10 miles per inch. For several islands I've bought very details maps. Besides scale it was very useful to find signs for fenced/unfenced side of the road there. Very useful when you seeking quite place for wild camping. I made a 70-80km a day as average. May be more in the beginning (130 km was maximum) of the trip and slow down to the end. Maximum elevation gained was 1km in a day. Accomodation. I had one night stop in B&B (Lairg, 30 GBP) and about half stops at camping with my own tent and other half - just wild camping. Camping are about 5-10 GBP (funny, but the cheaper - the better). Best was at Uig (Skye island), 5 pounds. Prices. During 1 month I've spent about 1000 GBP, including flight from/to Moscow, rent a bike with bags in Edinburgh, all local transport, meals, accomodation, whisky tours, gifts etc. Weather. I was lucky. :) But there are windy places. If you have any questions - ask. Best wishes. Roman. |
