My route can be found here: http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=259075 It is not the exact way I want to follow, just a sketch. Also I am planning to visit Orkney islands (not sure though), Outer Hebrides (Lewis, both Uist, Barra), Skye and Islay. Then back to Edinburgh. It's a maximum plan. I have almost a month, and would like rather autonomous trip (have a tent, sleeping bag, stove, etc) without hotels and B&Bs. Well, B&B is possible. I think I able to make 60-90 mi in a day (depends on the surface). Main concern -- route I've chosen. My way has a some roads with heavy car traffic. Also, there are many private territories along the way (especially between Edinburgh and Inverness), so I foresee some problems with night stops (I mean with tent). I've read some posts here, on other sites and see that there are a lot of "quiet roads" even with hard surface and it is possible to use only such roads even during long trips around Scotland. Is it possible to use these roads without detailed maps, just looking at the signs? I have no problem with map, compass and all this staff, just want to prepare. :) So, I ask rather common advice -- how to plan such a long trip better? Thank you! |
